Camp Counsellors
YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island based in Sooke, BC is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Camp Counsellors. YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island is known to help shape tomorrow’s leaders through outdoor adventure and wilderness immersion. We offer both overnight and day camp programs. We have around 1200 acres of wilderness and a commitment to excellence, our camp provides children and youth with skills, confidence, and appreciation for the natural environment. Our camp includes activities include canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, archery, orienteering, ropes courses, lake swimming, games, campfires, drama, and more. The candidates who will get selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualification such as a minimum of one year of post-secondary education and will be returning to a post-secondary educational institution in fall 2023
Experience: Candidates having an experience working with children is an asset, other experience details are mentioned below
Other Requirements:
- The candidate should be able to work as the part of a tight-knit and caring team
- The candidate should be able to provide a clear police information check, with Vulnerable Sector Screening also be able to provide a proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (two doses)
- The candidate should be able to provide a Standard First Aid with CPR-C
- The candidate should be able to live in rustic cabins or yurts with a co-counsellor and the camper group
- The candidate having experience working with children in a day or overnight camp, childcare, educational or recreational setting is an asset.
- The candidate having High School Graduation and post-secondary education/courses are an asset, having Current Wilderness First Aid an asset also having Hiking, Canoeing, Kayaking, Rock Climbing certifications an asset (training provided)
- The candidate should have an extensive experience working with children in a wilderness environment is required
- The candidate having completed High School required, with post-secondary education/courses an asset
- The candidate should have SKGABC Assistant Overnight Guide Certification also have an current 40-hour Wilderness First Aid and CPR C Certification
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to lead activities, teach skills, facilitate safety, build community, and promote inclusion.
- The candidate should be responsible for meeting the emotional, physical and safety needs of a group of up to 10 campers, age 5-15
- The candidate should be able to take care of planning and delivering group programs, enthusiastically leading campers in all activities and camp-wide games and provide for the individual and group needs of children, up to 24 hours/day.
- The candidate should be able to manage group dynamics and behavior of the group to ensure all campers feel supported, safe, and included also be able to follow YMCA Camping and BCCA accreditation standards in program delivery – part of the training
- The candidate should be able to promote and role model the YMCA-YWCA core values: honesty, caring, respect, responsibility and inclusion. Also be able to take care of demonstrating, promoting and role modeling exceptional interpersonal skills, and a love of working with children and youth.
- The candidate should be able to seek help from a supervisor when it’s necessary
