The Canadian Coast Guard is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Officer, Ab-initio Trainee at various locations. Canadian Coast Guard can be defined as a Special Operating Agency within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). We work to embrace proactive culture for 24/7 service to Canadians and for Canadians. We are known to be responsible for duties such as response to on-water and maritime incidents using a variety of vessels, hovercraft, helicopters, and small craft; and providing vital information and assistance to vessels, including navigation support, distress and safety communications and coordination of maritime trade. We have also got an announcement by the government of Canada, an Oceans Protection Plan, a whole of government approach to improve marine safety, to work with Indigenous groups, provinces, territories, and other stakeholders to better co-manage Canada’s oceans. Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and Bilingual Imperative Languages.

  • The candidate should be able to work 24/7.
  • The candidate should have competency in skills associated with MCTS Officer duties (Arithmetic, Checking, Coding, Memory, and Spatial Ability). Note: this will be assessed using the MCTS Aptitude Test.
  • The candidate should have the ability to keyboard
  • The candidate should have the ability to communicate orally
  • The candidate should have the ability to communicate in writing
  • The candidate should be able to work with others
  • The candidate should have client service orientation
  • The candidate should be able to manage difficult situations
  • The candidate should have adaptability skills

  • The candidate should be able to work with an initiative
  • The candidate should have experience in a marine environment (for example – member of a Ship’s crew, Navigation Officer, Commercial Fisheries, Sea Cadets, etc…)
  • The candidate should have the knowledge of Inuit culture, society and economy (Iqaluit only)
  • The candidate should have the knowledge of environmental characteristics of the Nunavut Settlement Area (Iqaluit only)
  • The candidate should be willing to relocate based on operational requirements
  • The candidate should be able to fulfill the health assessment requirements
  • The candidate should be willing and able to travel
  • All the candidates should be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate has to provide one of the first responses to ships and vessels in distress
  • The candidate has to oversee the safety of Canada’s waterways by listening for distress and safety calls, monitoring marine traffic to prevent accidents, making sure that vessels comply with Canadian laws, and by broadcasting maritime safety information, such as weather and navigational warnings
  • The candidate should be able to cope up with fast paced job responsibilities
  • The candidate has to speak with vessel captains and crews in all kinds of situations, and are often the first contact in a marine emergency or crisis.
  • The candidate has to act as a go-between for Search and Rescue and the vessel in danger, and are often the voice those in danger look to for advice and comfort.
