Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a approved Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certificate with the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be capable of occasionally lifting or moving objects weighing less than 25 lbs
- The candidates should be regularly required to sit at a workstation for extended periods of time
- The candidates should constantly use fine finger precision work while working on a computer
- The candidates should include multiple phone lines ringing, listening for radio transmissions from ambulances, which have to be time-stamped and entered into the computer, and background talking from other dispatchers and staff
- The candidates should maintain alertness and concentration when performing emergency medical dispatch work, with higher than normal levels of attentiveness or alertness for the health and safety of others required at all times
- The candidates should be able to handle time pressures, interruptions, deadlines, and lack of control over work pace when dealing with medical emergency dispatching and responding to 911 calls, listening to radio transmissions from ambulances, and entering information into the computer
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should complete Health Care Provider (HCP) – CPR at the first scheduled offering of the program prior to commencing the position
- The candidates should complete a recognized and approved Medical Terminology course within one year of commencing the position and a Critical Aptitude Test, which will be administered by the Employer
- The candidates should have knowledge of of the geography of Newfoundland and Labrador, including major streets, highways, public transit, hospitals, primary medical facilities and Microsoft Windows in a multi-screen computer environment
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability and dexterity in handling call-taking and dispatching functions using computer-aided dispatch, multi-line telephone, and radio communications systems
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multi-tasking high-stress environment and carry out priorities as identified
- The candidates should demonstrate sound and rapid decision-making ability under stressful conditions
- The candidates should possess effective interpersonal communications and customer service skills to deal with the public and co-workers
- The candidates should demonstrate strong critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills
- The candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively in English
- The candidates should have a satisfactory record of work performance and attendance
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to work within the Medical Communications Centre (MCC) with accountability to ensure coordination and balanced ambulance coverage to all communities within the designated coverage area
- The candidates should be able to provide rapid response to requests for Routine, Emergency, and Non-Emergent Ambulance service, as well as coordinating the Flight Team and the Provincial Air Ambulance program
- The candidates should be able to work independently under the policies and guidelines of Eastern Health, reporting directly to the Operations Supervisor
