Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function
Experience: Candidates should possess relevant training and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays
  • The candidates should have the ability to operate and monitor computerized security equipment
  • The candidates should be capable of successfully completing mandatory training and recertification as required by Corporate Security including, but not limited to, City of Toronto Use of Force and Foundational certification, de-escalation training, defensive tactics, handcuffing and baton use, Standard First Aid, CPR level ‘C’ and AED, WHMIS and other position-related training

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have considerable experience providing facility security, including the use of security systems and key systems, or demonstrate an approved equivalent combination of education and experience, working with a computer and the ability to utilize a variety of software, Microsoft Word and Excel, mainframe systems and divisional databases
  • The candidates should possess and be able to maintain a valid Security Guard License in accordance with the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005, S.O. 2005, c. 34, a valid certificate in Standard First Aid and CPR level ‘C’, and be certified to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • The candidates should have a strong knowledge of legislative policies such as the Criminal Code, Trespass to Property Act and WHMIS, patrolling and emergency response, Private Security and Investigative Services Act
  • The candidates should have highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills, including conflict resolution, problem-solving and decision-making
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to respond to staff and the public in a courteous and effective manner
  • The candidates should have the ability to prepare and maintain clear, concise, and legible security reports and detailed records
  • The candidates should be able to compile accurate information and prepare effective reports and correspondence using a computer
  • The candidates should be proficient in using various tools and equipment related to the role, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)  baton, ballistic resistive vest, handcuffs and two-way radios
  • The candidates should consider having an OACP Certificate of Results

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide security services to City-owned and operated properties, operating various security systems, and patrolling to respond to both emergency and non-emergency security and law enforcement calls while maintaining confidentiality
  • The candidates should be able to monitor and patrol assigned areas of City-owned and operated properties and surrounding grounds through physical patrols and monitoring security systems, observing, investigating, and acting on possible breaches of security, criminal code violations, fire and safety hazards, illegal entry, theft and equipment malfunctions
  • The candidates should be able to respond to public inquiries, promoting security services positively, conducting security audits and assessments, advising on physical security enhancements, informing designated authorities during security, fire, or health emergencies, activating fire alarm and safety systems, assisting in evacuation procedures, and providing security for various events and functions.
  • The candidates should be able to conduct open-up and facility lock-down procedures, security testing, screen unauthorized persons or staff, escort or physically remove offenders and trespassers, legally arrest individuals if required, respond to security and fire alarms, perform proactive patrols, respond to public inquiries, perform guarded tours, record daily activities, maintain logbooks, receive and record complaints, conduct investigations,
  • The candidates should be able to prepare incident reports, conduct follow-up investigations, testify at court proceedings, administer basic first aid and emergency CPR, operate automated external defibrillators, assist supervisors in developing site-specific security policies and procedures, enforce bylaws, various Acts, Codes, and City policies, resolve conflict situations, maintain current knowledge of required legislation, resources, and City policies and procedures, and comply with all applicable requirements contained in the Private Security and Investigative Services Act
