Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have minimum three (3) year Diploma/Degree in related field: Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biotechnology)
Experience: Candidates should have three (3) years of science-related technical duties in a laboratory environment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have some knowledge of relevant federal and provincial health regulations, including Public Health Agency (PHAC) Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines, Human Pathogens and Toxins Act (HPTA), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and Occupation Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
  • The candidates should possess a strong background and expertise in laboratory techniques related to molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, analytical instrumentation, or environmental science
  • The candidates should demonstrate a proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in structured and unstructured environments, under pressure, and with changing and competing priorities and timelines
  • The candidates should have experience calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to read and interpret technical procedures and/or government regulations
  • The candidates should exhibit excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and technologies to all levels of the organization
  • The candidates should be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • The candidates should possess excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should have proven organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The candidates should have experience with asset management is preferred
  • The candidates should be proficient with MS Office and MS Teams, Internet, and email; comfortable using spreadsheets and database software

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide technical expertise and perform various tasks to support the science laboratory and field-based components for the Department’s Programs under the direction of the Chair, Business Technology, and Outdoor training
  • The candidates should be able to provide individualized assistance to students, administer tests and skills assessments, assist in evaluations, and plan and conduct skill demonstrations
  • The candidates should be able to manage all aspects of lab and field equipment inventory, including tracking maintenance, repair, obtaining quotes, and ordering, while ensuring overall orderliness and cleanliness of the Science laboratory
  • The candidates should be able to provide in-lab/field technical expertise and support to faculty members and students in various BTOT programs, ensuring safe working habits are demonstrated and enforced
  • The candidates should be able to set up, shut down, and clean up for all scheduled laboratory activities, as well as plan and conduct skill demonstrations for students and assist in evaluations
  • The candidates should be able to troubleshoot equipment failures or malfunctions during lab/field activities and ensure all materials and equipment for assignments are on-hand, in working order, and that appropriate inventory levels are maintained
  • The candidates should be able to orient faculty and students on safety, operation, and maintenance of lab equipment and instruments, monitor for compliance with WHMIS standards, and enforce safety rules
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the laboratory for unsafe conditions and practices, identify opportunities to reduce risks, and ensure compliance with applicable government legislation
  • The candidates should be able to update and maintain standard operating procedures documents, arrange for waste storage and removal, and maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS sheets)
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the receipt, shipment, and transport of dangerous materials according to WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations and provide purchasing decision advice to program faculty and other college employees
  • The candidates should be able to participate in promotional and marketing events to promote the programs of the College and work during scheduled hours, some of which may occur during evenings and/or weekends
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as assigned
