Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have hold a CAA Operations Level 2 certification
Experience: Candidates should have extensive avalanche control experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should take daily weather observations, gather snowpack observations and lead avalanche control teams
  • The candidates should participate in twice-daily meetings where avalanche forecasts and assessments and be a team player

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess current WorkSafeBC Blasting Certification (Hand Charging with Safety Fuse; Helicopter), a CAA Professional Member and NUEC Level 3 First Aid with advanced protocols
  • The candidates should have a High School Diploma or equivalent (College or University Degree preferred)
  • The candidates should have experience working with ski patrol and possess backcountry ski experience
  • The candidates should have computer experience, including MS Office (CAA InfoEx platform and Snowpro+
  • The candidates should be current with CAA standards outlined in the Operational Recording guidelines and Standards for Avalanche Professionals (OGRS)
  • The candidates should be current with applicable WorkSafeBC regulations and current with the Explosives Act
  • The candidates should have a positive attitude, possess a safety-oriented mindset and strong English communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide supervision and direction for all workers and guests in and around avalanche terrain and provide training and mentorship to employees and provide a daily avalanche hazard assessment and forecast and oversee the avalanche control program resort-wide
  • The candidates should be able to ensure that avalanche risk within all open terrain is within operational thresholds (the operational risk band) and that terrain with elevated risk is closed to the public
  • The candidates should be able to ensure accurate and timely weather observations are being recorded and provide information to guests and the public with respect to avalanche risk management
  • The candidates should be able to periodically review and update the panorama emergency response plan as it relates to avalanche involvements and ensure that adequate snowpack observations are being recorded
  • The candidates should be able to investigate any near misses or incidents involving guests or staff and report to the program manager and information regarding closures and terrain restrictions is communicated to all relevant staff and the public
  • The candidates should be able to ensure that accurate data is being recorded locally and reported on InfoEx and ensure that accurate weather data is conveyed to media and other departments
  • The candidates should be able to oversee, direct, or participate in any rescue or search operations being conducted in avalanche terrain and ensure records are kept for daily meetings, near misses, incidents, training, blasting and explosives inventory
  • The candidates should be able to assist the manager with Avalanche Safety Plan revisions, business, and budget planning and provide first aid to injured workers or guests
  • The candidates should be able to oversee the operations of any rope rescue operations on site and assist with dispatch and other patrol-related duties
  • The candidates should be able to assist with other departments, listen carefully and communicate clearly while speaking and writing and ski at an advanced to expert level and traverse difficult mountain terrain and travel
