Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have experience with custodial/cleaning duties with the ability to use various types of cleaning equipment and materials

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should have the ability to delegate tasks and provide direction to junior staff
  • The candidates must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position, in all weather conditions. This includes, but may not be limited to climbing ladders and scaffolds, working at heights, and working in confined spaces

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience using hand and power tools, power-operated custodial equipment, and measuring instruments and have knowledge in the operation of swimming pool maintenance, including vacuuming, water testing, and balancing pool water
  • The candidates should have knowledge in maintenance procedures of buildings, heating, ventilation, cooling systems, and their components and possess problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions and resolve issues
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal satisfactorily with the staff and the general public and have written communication skills with the ability to produce clear and concise documents
  • The candidates should have the ability to plan and organize work effectively and have verbal communication skills with the ability to understand and execute instructions and effectively communicate with staff, building users, and the public
  • The candidates should have proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel and have knowledge of materials, chemicals, and safe handling practices related to the position (WHMIS)
  • The candidates should have knowledge of safe working methods and practices including the occupational hazards and safety precautions and regulations applicable to the position’s area of work
  • The candidates must possess and maintain a valid Province of Manitoba Power Engineer’s Refrigeration Class (W ticket) or 4th class or better Power Engineering certification and must possess a Swimming Pool Operations and Management Certificate or be willing to obtain it within eighteen (18) months
  • The candidates must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s notice in force document upon request
  • The candidates must possess a St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR-C or equivalent, or be willing and able to obtain it within three (3) months

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate and maintain ice maintenance equipment (Zamboni and ice Edger) according to departmental procedures and perform assigned vehicle and equipment checks to ensure proper functioning and able to maintain equipment by inspecting it, checking all fluids, and completing pre- and post-use reports/records as required
  • The candidates should be able to safely operate various types of hand and power tools as needed and able to perform custodial duties on a daily basis, including cleaning players boxes, arena glass, dressing rooms, lobby, washrooms, and spectator areas by sweeping floors, sanitizing washrooms, emptying garbage, and mopping
  • The candidates should be able to use backpack blowers and snow blowers to clean walkways and entrances/exits and able to monitor the arena for unsafe conditions, report irregularities, and correct them as part of the department’s responsibility for safety in a public building
  • The candidates should be able to inspect and maintain the arena by identifying and recording all deficiencies and repair information to enable prompt repairs to be initiated and able to respond to customer service requests by determining the nature of the concern and advising/carrying out appropriate corrective action
  • The candidates should be able to open the facility and perform required safety checks and building duties and able to maintain cooperative working relations with other departments, divisions, branches, or related work groups to enhance performance
  • The candidates should be able to maintain vehicle and arena inventory by checking quantity and condition of supplies and replace them where necessary and able to maintain building security systems on a daily basis
  • The candidates should be able to assist in the training of new employees by providing procedural examples and demonstrations so that proper task methods can be taught/learned through on-the-job experience and able to perform related duties consistent with the classification, work overtime, and various shifts as required
  • The candidates should be able to perform routine equipment maintenance on building equipment systems and conduct repairs as required and able to perform a variety of custodial duties, general maintenance repairs to building equipment, and upkeep tasks
  • The candidates should be able to test and maintain proper water quality in all pool facilities to ensure compliance with Manitoba Health regulations and maintain proper water chemistry and able to assist in the orientation of fellow employees and maintain cooperative working relations
  • The candidates should be able to perform related duties consistent with the classification, work overtime, and various shifts as required
