Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should hold a valid Truck and Coach Technician (310T) certificate and maintain it in good standing
Experience: Candidates should have at least 3 years of increasingly responsible work and supervisory experience, and demonstrate the capability for supervising other employees

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, afternoons, days, and statutory holidays, with various off days
  • The candidates should possess the ability to establish effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, senior management, union executives, and the public
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to act as a coach and mentor through effective staff development
  • The candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong organizational abilities
  • The candidates should have a proven ability to create, communicate, and implement procedures and processes that improve efficiencies and productivity while promoting safe work practices and equipment operation, demonstrate proven abilities in the use of database systems and computer applications

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a journeyperson tradesperson, following attainment of trade certification, with exposure to the full range of activities in a bus maintenance operation and increasingly responsible work with all critical bus systems
  • The candidates should possess a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications Automotive Service Technician (310S), a valid G Driver’s License; a D or C Ontario Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement is preferred, along with a Driving Abstract acceptable to the city
  • The candidates should have detailed knowledge of truck or coach vehicle maintenance and repair, and manufacturer’s specifications and schematics
  • The candidates should possess comprehensive knowledge of shop management practices, preventative maintenance theory, and legislated requirements from the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Labour, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to oversee day-to-day activities of the maintenance staff to ensure effective and efficient coordination of vehicle inspection, repair, cleaning, and overall maintenance operations
  • The candidates should be able to establish and monitor performance standards and troubleshoot operational deficiencies, allocate personnel and equipment according to priorities, schedule vehicle maintenance, and prepare work orders using a computer-assisted system
  • The candidates should be able to implement and maintain policies, procedures, and standards that ensure a safe, productive, and timely operation in alignment with continuous improvement initiatives, motivate staff, assess performance, manage absenteeism, apply disciplinary measures, and assist with grievances at Step 1
  • The candidates should be able to instruct employees in procedures, methods, and performance standards related to maintenance activities, support and potentially supervise the operation of bus wash racks, fuelling stations, and fare box clearing in the absence of the Washbay Supervisor
  • The candidates should be able to manage statistical data such as book-offs, sick absences, overtime, leave requests, and accident/incident reports, participate in monthly maintenance meetings and ensure maintenance records are kept current through updates to the maintenance clerk
  • The candidates should be able to ensure all maintenance work complies with Ministry of Transportation legislated requirements, ensure staff compliance with all safety requirements, Corporate policies, procedures, and Standard Practice Instructions
  • The candidates should be able to support the orientation and training of new Transit Maintenance staff in organizational policies and procedures, identify and assist with bus and bus part warranty claims, including tagging defective components to ensure warranty commitments are met
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the work environment to ensure proper treatment, storage, or disposal of tools, parts, and materials, and return of repairable parts to Stores
  • The candidates should be able to maintain positive employee relations by ensuring fair and equitable treatment in work assignments and performance management, conduct technical investigations and quality audits of procedures, perform other related duties
