Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a diploma from a recognized college or school of nursing
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be physically capable of lifting, turning, and transferring residents manually
  • The candidates should be willing to participate in in-service education programs and organize and complete daily work activities, providing direction to staff members
  • The candidates should be able to work cooperatively with other staff members as part of a nursing team
  • The candidates should be available to work four separate days a week

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be registered and in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and a current First Aid and CPR Certificate and expertise or working knowledge with homeless populations and harm reduction
  • The candidates should have experience addressing complex client care needs for marginalized and homeless populations in community, shelter, or hospital settings physical and mental health, and addiction
  • The candidates should be able to provide nursing care to both ambulant and non-ambulant residents with predictable outcomes, focusing on restorative health promotion and palliation
  • The candidates should demonstrate sensitivity, empathy, and understanding of resident or client behavior and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The candidates should have knowledge of restorative and health promotion interventions to contribute to care plan development and maintenance
  • The candidates should understand dementia and mental health diseases to support the Hostel Services philosophy and nursing standards
  • The candidates should be able to deliver nursing care in accordance with the standards of the College of Nurses, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Program, and applicable legislation and regulation
  • The candidates should have customer service skills for addressing service inquiries, requests, and complaints from clients, service providers, and the general public

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide nursing care, develop and modify care plans for residents or clients, and attend team meetings and observe, monitor, and evaluate the condition of clients or residents, reporting on vital signs, injuries, and general physical and emotional conditions
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and administer prescribed medications and treatments, including insulin injections, and record quantities administered and inform residents or clients about medications and potential side effects, and ensure medication supplies meet designated inventories
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and apply clean dressings and bandages, clean wounds, and perform first aid including CPR and orient new residents or clients and staff, notify appropriate departments of admittance, and secure personal valuables
  • The candidates should be able to schedule and coordinate appointments with hospitals, clinics, and specialists, and ensure results and records are available to clients and assist residents or clients with personal care tasks, including hygiene, bathing, dressing, toileting, ambulation, and transferring
  • The candidates should be able to provide support with proper exercise and ambulation techniques, and maintain accurate documentation, including charts, records, and incident reports
  • The candidates should be able to accompany physicians on rounds, assist with examinations, and provide emotional support to residents or clients and their families and change linens, make beds, sort and bag soiled linen, and order office supplies
  • The candidates should be able to assist with organizing and implementing weekly clinics, obtain admission histories, and educate clients on important health information and train students and administer EKG tests
  • The candidates should be able to refer and advocate with community agencies regarding health and social services, conduct and read TB skin tests, and monitor for side effects of TB medication
  • The candidates should be able to inspect physician offices for proper vaccine storage, arrange referrals, collect clinical specimens, and accompany clients to medical appointments
