Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed the tenth (10th) school grade
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 1 year of experience driving a tandem axel sander, plow engaged in snow and ice control

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should maintain satisfactory demerit levels as dictated by COE Fleet Safety
  • The candidates should be able to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, including working in confined areas, scaffolding, and under variable weather conditions
  • The candidates should be able to work in confined spaces and at heights and be willing to work with hazardous materials
  • The candidates should be available to work a rotating 12-hour shift, including both day and night shifts during winter

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience operating equipment assigned to the position or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • The candidates should have passed the COE certification and received training on the tandem axel sander, plow
  • The candidates should have experience with bridge structures and operating a variety of hand and power tools and possess knowledge of bridge maintenance and repair methods
  • The candidates should be familiar with standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of bridges, boardwalks, lookouts, docks, and boat launches
  • The candidates should be able to operate tools, equipment, and materials associated with the position
  • The candidates should be capable of understanding and executing written and oral instructions and knowledge of relevant occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • The candidates should possess sufficient strength and agility to perform and adhere to environmental policies and procedures, including ENVISO, Hazard Assessments, and Standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate alignment with the organization’s cultural commitments and leadership competencies, embracing equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion and be fit for a respirator, in compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring
  • The candidates should comply with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including wearing steel-toed boots and hold a valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent) and maintain a City Driver’s Permit

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate and perform minor maintenance on various equipment, including jackhammers, drills, chain saws, tampers, sandblasters, concrete vibrators, and more
  • The candidates should be able to work on structural steel, concrete, asphalt, or wood components of bridges, ensuring the integrity and safety of these structures and perform bridge washing, debris removal, and other related maintenance tasks to keep bridges clean and safe
  • The candidates should be able to carry out bridge painting, sandblasting, sealing, grouting, placing, and finishing structural concrete to maintain the quality and durability of bridges and handle various toxic products such as epoxies, grouts, sealers, paints, thinners, and cleaners safely, following proper safety procedures
  • The candidates should be able to assist in site setup, maintenance, and cleanup, including tasks like scaffolding construction and dismantling, barricade and equipment locating, load and unload equipment from trucks, ensuring proper handling and transportation
  • The candidates should be able to operate a tandem or single-axle truck mounted with a sand spreader, front mount or underbody plow during the winter season, performing plowing, sanding, and de-icing activities
  • The candidates should be able to load and unload materials efficiently and safely during winter operations and perform routine maintenance duties, including cleaning the truck box and worksite, as well as routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to be aware of road obstacles to avoid damage to public property while operating plows during snow and ice removal tasks and inform the lead hand of any on-the-road issues with equipment, accidents, or property damage
  • The candidates should be able to perform general labor tasks, such as brushing, manual sidewalk cleaning, sanding, snow shoveling, pothole repairs, and other snow and ice-related duties
  • The candidates should be able to perform all work in accordance with the Branch’s Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program – ISO 14001 standards
