Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a university graduation in Recreation
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to organize, promote, and direct others in a variety of group recreational activities
  • The candidates should have the ability to provide guidance to community recreation program committees and promote interest and participation in program activities
  • The candidates should have the ability to recruit, instruct, provide orientation, assign, and review the work of recreational personnel
  • The candidates should have the ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and maintain control while exercising discipline with tact and consistency
  • The candidates should have the ability to maintain statistical, financial, and clerical records and write reports

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a related discipline with a minimum of one year’s part-time experience related to the work OR completion of an approved diploma course in recreation with a minimum of two years’ full-time experience related to the work
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a planned community recreation program
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and practices involved in conducting community recreation programs
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of the policies of the Board of Parks and Recreation as applied to community recreation
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction and skill in using recreational equipment and performing various recreational activities

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to identify and report on a segment of the overall community centre recreation program and assume responsibility for coordinating and directing assigned segments
  • The candidates should be able to make recommendations on the development, implementation, and discontinuation of recreation programs and events and provide guidance and information to community groups and committees, promote interest and participation in program activities, and establish liaison with agencies and community groups
  • The candidates should be able to recruit, instruct, and direct group leaders, part-time staff, and volunteers while providing orientation and supervision to full-time and part-time staff involved in recreation programs schedule and supervise Program Assistant IIs and Program Assistant IIIs
  • The candidates should be able to arrange and schedule space within assigned facilities or areas in consultation with peers and participate in reviewing centre policies and procedures and monitor programs, maintain statistical records, and prepare narrative evaluations of programs
  • The candidates should be able to maintain operating and administrative records, provide cost and revenue estimates for recreation programs, and assist in overseeing admissions and fee collection
  • The candidates should be able to initiate requisitions for materials and equipment within budgetary limits and arrange for the disposal of unsafe, worn, or obsolete equipment and prepare publicity material for promoting programs and events
  • The candidates should be able to enforce rules and regulations, address issues with groups or individuals who fail to comply, and act in the absence of a superior during assigned shifts and perform other duties and responsibilities
