Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of complete post-secondary education in horticulture
Experience: Candidates should have three years of related horticulture and/or greenhouse experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in inclement weather
  • The candidates should be capable of performing the physical demands of the position, including lifting, climbing, and kneeling on a regular basis
  • The candidates should have proven ability to multi-task and make decisions in a fast-paced, ever-changing construction environment
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively, efficiently, effectively, and fairly with City staff, the public, and other external agencies

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have 1-3 years of experience involving manual, physical labour and operating power tools, vehicles, and related equipment
  • The candidates should be currently licensed as a Structural Exterminator with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) or hold an equivalent certification
  • The candidates should have thorough working knowledge of horticulture operations and procedures, including plant types/varieties, plant growth requirements, pest identification, and control measures
  • The candidates should have thorough knowledge of the watering program for hanging baskets and planters, including installation and maintenance
  • The candidates should possess a valid MTO ‘G’ class driver’s license in good standing with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City
  • The candidates should have basic math and computer skills and be comfortable adopting new technology to support operations; knowledge of software applications such as Inframap, city maps, and Microsoft Outlook
  • The candidates should be able to work constructively in a team environment or act independently as required, exercising good judgment and safe and appropriate maintenance practices and procedures
  • The candidates should have a comprehensive working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations for horticulture activities, including working from heights, First Aid, traffic control, sharps and biohazards, and WHMIS and experience with winter control operations, including plowing, salting, and trackless operation
  • The candidates should ensure that all required certifications or licenses are kept current and in good standing, attending training and remaining apprised of new technologies within the horticulture field; supplementary training

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a wide range of administrative, maintenance, and operational activities related to horticulture, including plant propagation, installation, and maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to operate equipment related to horticulture, greenhouse, and landscaping requirements, participate in planning and organizing greenhouse production and seasonal displays
  • The candidates should be able to provide occasional training and guidance to staff on operational activities, equipment, and health and safety procedures, ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and maintain required documentation and records
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to the development and implementation of operational and maintenance programs, provide exceptional customer service by responding to inquiries and communicating with user groups
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles, perform daily checks on vehicles and equipment and document any issues
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a safe work environment by following safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies,  perform winter operations activities and participate in winter control shifts
  • The candidates should be able to support Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Services operations, participate in various teams and initiatives
