Government of Nova Scotia’s Justice Department manages the province’s legal and justice services. It oversees courts, correctional facilities, and provides legal services to the government. The department ensures a fair, accessible justice system, supporting crime prevention and community safety initiatives. Through its comprehensive programs, it maintains law and order in Nova Scotia. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or Intermediate or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of legal experience at the bar

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to review voluminous written material, to write, to think conceptually, and to think strategically
  • The candidates should possess the mental focus required for long periods of time and should have a very good memory
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to handle adversarial and hostile people in ways that de-escalate situations and build insights with others frequently
  • The candidates should be comfortable sitting at a computer for long periods of time and willing to work overtime on occasion
  • The candidates should have the ability to handle pressure situations, multiple deadlines, and many competing demands
  • The candidates should be capable of maintaining long periods of concentration required at hearings and while writing briefs
  • The candidates should be able to handle hostile situations in a way that allows them to glean relevant information without engaging personally or reacting negatively
  • The candidates should have the ability to participate in Earned Days Off, which includes 1 day off every 3 weeks
  • The candidates should be able to accommodate flexible working arrangements, including up to 2 days of remote work per week

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be practicing members of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (or be eligible for practicing membership), in good standing
  • The candidates should have experience advising government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions, as well as other public sector entities
  • The candidates should have experience with commercial transactions and possess excellent research, analytical, and organizational skills
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to function with minimal supervision in a team environment
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to offer creative and innovative solutions to complex challenges
  • The candidates should have the flexibility to adapt and thrive in a continuously changing and demanding environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to advise Ministers, Deputy or Associate Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government leaders on matters involving law, negotiation, strategy, and public policy
  • The candidates should be able to draft and interpret statutes, regulations and contracts and assist with submissions to Cabinet
  • The candidates should be able to present information about government and law to the public generally or as part of a consultation process for public policy development
  • The candidates should be able to serve on project teams with senior and intermediate staff of client departments
