Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have Bachelors or Master of Science in Occupational Therapy and possess current registration with the Nova Scotia College of Occupational Therapists
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to work in various environments, including healthcare facilities and clients’ homes
- The candidates should be capable of performing physical assessments, which may involve standing and walking
- The candidates should possess the capability to lift and move equipment relevant to occupational therapy
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be familiar with the use of adaptive equipment, wheelchairs, positioning chairs, utensils, and splints. They should also have knowledge of the potential hazards associated with equipment, tools, and materials used in occupational therapy
- The candidates should have knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational therapy, anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology as related to the practice of occupational therapy
- The candidates should have previous experience working in nursing homes or a health care environment, which is considered an asset
- The candidates should demonstrate a passion for the healthcare sector and a commitment to ensuring seniors have access to quality accommodations, services, and care
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to administer and interpret standardized and non-standardized tests and evaluations to assess residents with occupational therapy-related concerns such as the level of independence in activities of daily living, seating and mobility, swallowing and meal texture, pressure reduction, and skin integrity, splinting
- The candidates should have the ability to develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical records, observation, and referral; they should be able to confer with interdisciplinary staff regarding an overall treatment plan for residents
- The candidates should be capable of evaluating the progress of residents in relation to occupational therapy treatment provided through the use of tests and observation. They should also confer with nursing staff and physicians regarding the effectiveness of treatment
- The candidates should be able to prepare progress reports, funding requests, and statistical reports related to the occupational therapy treatment program and resident needs. They should maintain treatment records as required
- The candidates should participate as members of the interdisciplinary team, giving evaluation and progress reports on residents. They should be able to design and produce adaptive equipment, utensils, splints, or other orthotic devices as needed for use by residents and instruct residents and staff in their use
- The candidates should coordinate the management of facility equipment, including contacting suppliers for service and maintenance of wheelchairs, geri chairs, and power wheelchairs
- The candidates should provide staff training on ergonomics, seating assessment, skin integrity, equipment, and other related topics as required
