Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Bachelor of Science Degree with graduation from a recognized orthoptic training program
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years orthoptic experience in an ophthalmic setting

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should occasionally lift items weighing between 10-25lbs
  • The candidates should regularly engage in sitting, standing, and moving around several times during examinations
  • The candidates should constantly use fine finger/precision work and operate hand tools and equipment for measuring and assessment, requiring control and steadiness, eye/hand coordination, and awkward body positioning
  • The candidates should maintain higher than normal levels of attentiveness or alertness for the health and safety of patients, particularly when instilling eye drops in uncooperative or upset children and when examining eyes closely with sensitive equipment to avoid accidentally poking or scratching eyes
  • The candidates should be subject to time pressures/deadlines and interruptions as clinics are often overbooked, and many patients are waiting for extended periods

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold current certification by the Canadian or American Orthoptic Council
  • The candidates should possess excellent communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities
  • The candidates should be committed to continuous learning and family-centered care
  • The candidates should maintain a satisfactory record of work performance

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Division Manager of the Emergency and Ambulatory Care Division of the Children’s and Women’s Health Program
  • The candidates should be able to provide assessment and treat anomalies of ocular motilities, in particular strabismus and amblyopia conditions under the direction of an Ophthalmologist
  • The candidates should be able to administer appropriate ophthalmic/orthoptic tests including visual acuity, ocular motility, optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and binocular vision assessments and complete such reports in a timely manner
  • The candidates should be able to provide visual screening procedures in ophthalmology clinics, potentially including out-reach clinic services outside of St. John’s
  • The candidates should be able to discuss issues relating to patient care, surgeries, and ophthalmology follow-ups with referring ophthalmologists
  • The candidates should be able to instruct medical students or interns on the techniques of Orthoptic assessments
