Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have accredited courses in Engineering or Architectural Technology (6 Months) or High school graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of related experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift, carry, or transport medium to heavy weight plans and materials occasionally
  • The candidates should be capable of sitting or standing with arms unsupported while keyboarding frequently
  • The candidates should expect prolonged standing at the counter often
  • The candidates should be comfortable working from a ladder while filing occasionally
  • The candidates should be prepared to deal with negative and verbally abusive comments and complaints occasionally
  • The candidates should be able to focus on detailed drawings and a variety of source data and computer work for short periods frequently
  • The candidates should be willing to work in the file room occasionally
  • The candidates should be aware of exposure to dust from archival plans, which is rare

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to organize and prioritize work effectively
  • The candidates should understand and apply administrative and regulatory functions related to processing and issuance of sign and construction-related permits
  • The candidates should be able to type at 60 words per minute and operate current City word processing, spreadsheet, and other related departmental software at a working level
  • The candidates should be proficient in using standard office equipment and be able to read and interpret technical drawings and plans
  • The candidates should interpret related policies, regulations, and bylaws and maintain accurate records and coordinate record-keeping practices
  • The candidates should establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal effectively with the public and outside agencies

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform administrative, technical, and regulatory functions related to the processing and issuance of building, plumbing, electrical, sign, and other construction-related permits in accordance with applicable bylaws, statutes, and regulations
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate permit records and website information, including providing coordination for a Permits and Inspections records management system, both electronic and paper
  • The candidates should be able to administer the system for the permit issuance process, including intake, circulation, and issuance using the departmental electronic permit tracking system
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the distribution of permit-related process information on the City’s website by collecting information and drafting content in consultation with department and communications staff
  • The candidates should be able to receive, review, and analyze sign permit applications, perform calculations to assess compliance with sign regulation bylaws, and recommend applications for approval or denial to the Chief Building Inspector
  • The candidates should be able to review permit applications, plans, and required documents for building, plumbing, electrical, demolition, sign, blasting, and excavation; assist applicants to ensure completeness of information; update property records; and enter permit information onto the permit tracking system
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a variety of manual and computerized records and related files, request and collect required documentation, issue occupancy/completion certificates upon approval, and forward documents to appropriate departments for further processing
  • The candidates should be able to respond to inquiries from the public, professional consultants, and other departments by providing information regarding records, fees, permit procedures, bylaws, and policies
  • The candidates should be able to calculate applicable permit costs, collect payments for permits and services, issue approved permits, enter and update transactions into a computerized cash and inventory control system, balance and verify daily revenue, prepare bank deposits, and maintain records of deposits, permits, and fees
  • The candidates should be able to type a variety of letters, memos, and reports, compose routine correspondence regarding permit application issues and fees, and operate a variety of office equipment including fax/scanner and photocopier machine
