Canadian Blood Services’ Stem Cells Team supports life-saving stem cell transplants for patients with blood disorders and immune diseases. It provides a national donor registry and umbilical cord blood banking to ensure a diverse stem cell supply. It plays a vital role in healthcare system. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of post-secondary education in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution, preferably in a science or health
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of progressive experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work independently, identify issues, and provide resolutions to problems in a hospital setting
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills, team-building abilities, and the capacity to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team as a non-hospital employee in a hospital setting
  • The candidates should be detail-oriented and capable of working in a highly regulated environment and the ability to work under pressure to meet job demands
  • The candidates should be required to carry a cellular phone or pager for notification purposes while at the hospital
  • The candidates should be available to work 100% on-site at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, collaborating with the Lois Hole Hospital for Women
  • The candidates should complete full-time training for the first 6-8 weeks and be flexible and willing to work additional hours, both planned and unplanned
  • The candidates should be available for a work schedule that may range from part-time to full-time, with shifts from Monday to Friday

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience with current Good Manufacturing Practices,  excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and bilingual proficiency
  • The candidates should be computer literate, with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • The candidates should have venipuncture experience, experience in cord blood collection and the ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy, and strict confidentiality
  • The candidates should foster and promote a positive public image of the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assemble and prepare supplies, equipment, and associated documentation at the work location
  • The candidates should be able to track and review donor permission documentation in collaboration with healthcare providers at the hospital and perform ex-utero umbilical cord blood collection (phlebotomy) and maternal blood sample collection
  • The candidates should be able to ensure error, accident and reaction, incident reporting is performed, initiating immediate corrective action and follow-up as required, in consultation with the Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank
  • The candidates should be able to implement and maintain the operation of the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank (CBS’CBB) collection location at the hospital and perform quality control of equipment, supplies, and procedures, ensuring that all required documentation is complete
  • The candidates should be able to ensure all equipment is clean, calibrated, and properly maintained, including corresponding documentation and assist in setting up and dismantling equipment and supplies at the hospital collection site, including packing, loading, and transporting products, supplies, and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to assist with scheduling and management of daily work requirements and work closely with hospital staff to maintain effective communication, ensuring continued cord blood collections and eliminating missed opportunities
  • The candidates should be able to participate in investigations and assist with root cause analysis for quality events within the local recruitment/collection portfolio, in consultation with the CBB-NS and Supervisor and ensure timely follow-up with all departments involved in quality events and assist with completing required documentation and corrective actions
  • The candidates should be able to provide advice for the development and implementation of process improvement plans and foster a spirit of cooperation and act as a liaison between team members and hospital stakeholders
  • The candidates should be able to promote good interpersonal skills and customer service principles among team members, pregnant mothers and their families, volunteers, physicians, midwives, nurses, and the hospital interdisciplinary team
