Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should provide a satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector screening check dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment
- The candidates should have the ability to bend and stretch to stock shelves, be dependable, available, of good character, and possess an understanding of young people
- The candidates should have the ability to perform the physical aspects of the position, including standing and walking for prolonged periods and carrying a hand-held stop sign
- The candidates should be willing to work in all weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind, and be capable of working under various road conditions with exposure to traffic noise and exhaust
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should demonstrate superior customer service skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- The candidates should be able to work with a wide variety of individuals, including children, Town residents, and the public, while immediately reporting any concerns to supervisory staff
- The candidates should demonstrate good judgment in determining safe entry into the flow of traffic
- The candidates should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act, a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to assist elementary school children in safely crossing roads at designated school crossing locations
- The candidates should be able to follow the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Corporation guidelines
- The candidates should be able to wear mandatory safety equipment provided by the Corporation of the Town of Oakville while on duty, demonstrate good judgment in determining safe timing for entering traffic flow
- The candidates should be able to cross roadways in a quick, orderly, and safe manner, exercise appropriate authority to stop approaching vehicles at crossings in a confident, decisive, and fair manner
- The candidates should be able to report and document any issues, such as weather conditions, children, or motorists, to the Supervisor of Crossing Guards punctual and remain for the entire scheduled shift
- The candidates should be able to apply safety precautions and procedures as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Town of Oakville policies
- The candidates should be able to commit to working the entire school year from September to June perform other assigned duties
