Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed a 2-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology
Experience: Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience in municipal engineering technology focused on planning, design, construction, placement of shallow utilities, interpretation of construction drawings, bylaws, provincial and federal legislation, specifications, preparation of technical documents, and field inspection

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to use discretion to make important decisions, the ability to engage in long periods of highly sustained attention to detail

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) certification with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)
  • The candidates should have experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Excel)
  • The candidates should have an understanding of City of Calgary business operations and experience with City Design for Subdivision Services (DGSS), Complete Streets guidelines, and other City standards

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to review and approve reports from developers, utilities, or telecoms engineers for shallow utility placement, consulting with partners and other business units
  • The candidates should be able to provide appropriate comments and recommendations within the specifications, guidelines, standards, bylaws, policies, provincial and federal regulations, and apply professional judgment and expertise
  • The candidates should be able to research approved utility rights of way and appropriate use of road right of way reports, plans, and other ongoing construction work and developments
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with other Engineering Technologists, Utilities Specialists, Bylaw and Permit Inspectors to facilitate development and ensure the City’s standards and requirements are met
  • The candidates should be able to review and share information on new subdivision development and joint use trenches, and advise of potential build conflicts
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with applicants to ensure utility and road right of way requirements are met while avoiding conflicts
  • The candidates should be able to lead meetings with coworkers, developers, and engineers regarding shallow utility infrastructure issues
  • The candidates should be able to provide expertise to various internal Business Units to assist in negotiating and resolving issues and conflicts
  • The candidates should be able to lead, coach, and train Utilities Planning Specialists in the duties of the position and new processes
