Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a nursing degree
Experience: Candidates should have five years of clinical nursing experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be prepared to perform patient assessment or care while in an awkward position, such as bending and stooping and handle moderate to heavy exposure to potential communicable diseases, body fluids, human waste, and hazardous materials sharps, toxic wastes, cleaning solutions in clinical environments daily
  • The candidates should be able to carry supplies and equipment over uneven, slippery roads and walkways daily for 6-7 months each year and travel in extreme cold weather 1-2 times a year
  • The candidates should use the senses of touch, sight, smell, and hearing during client assessments approximately 30% of the time and work with video display terminals 60% to 70% of the time, which can put them at risk for repetitive strain and visual injuries This involves moderate daily exposure
  • The candidates should be prepared for the unpredictability of outbreaks and communicable disease cases, which may cause continued disruption in their daily work, and handle potential exposure to volatile situations and concerns about personal safety. This involves moderate to heavy exposure, at least 50% of the time

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of public health nursing sciences to practice and synthesize knowledge from a broad range of theories, models, and frameworks and knowledge of best practices in a public health setting
  • The candidates should have knowledge of and the ability to apply advanced nursing processes and practices to ensure that all of the client’s physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual, and daily living needs are met
  • The candidates should have knowledge of social determinants of health and epidemiology as it applies to the health of populations, and the ability to apply that knowledge to service and program delivery and broader healthy public policy
  • The candidates should have the knowledge and ability to accurately interpret legislation, regulations, standards, policies, and guidelines related to Public Health and advanced nursing practice in Public Health
  • The candidates should have a conceptual understanding of the model of integrated community care delivery and the application of nurse practitioner competencies to multidisciplinary practice settings
  • The candidates should have knowledge about the history, structure, and interaction of public health and health care services at local, provincial/territorial, national, and international levels
  • The candidates should have completed a master’s program in nursing and hold certification as a Nurse Practitioner or an MSc-Nurse Practitioner
  • The candidates should be eligible for registration with the CANNN and have completed a satisfactory criminal record check

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to participate in communicable disease rounds (TB rounds and others and provide clinical expertise to case management
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to the development of operational protocols and procedures that enable all team members to work to their full scope with appropriate supports
  • The candidates should be able to provide direct clinical and advisory support to Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) and Occupational Health and Safety (OH and S) in prevention and outbreak management activities post-exposure prophylaxis, outbreak investigation
  • The candidates should be able to provide clinical leadership and consultations for STTBI programs assist with staging and case management and development of medical directives to enable other clinical staff to work to the top of their scope
  • The candidates should be able to support public and primary health teams throughout the territory in managing communicable disease and outbreaks and emergency preparedness and response planning with a focus on response to public health emergencies
  • The candidates should be able to systematically assess individual health status through the collection of an appropriate history, performance of a physical assessment, and the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests
  • The candidates should be able to develop a plan of care based on client needs, independently or in consultation with physicians and other members of the public health and primary care team
  • The candidates should be able to implement a comprehensive care plan, which may include the prescribing of pharmaceuticals in accordance with established regulations, policies, practices, and safety procedures, as well as non-pharmacological interventions
  • The candidates should be able to participate in case management rounds for the Tuberculosis program and provide clinical assessment support and case management of all latent cases for the program
