Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High school Graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of experience in a relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment frequently
  • The candidates should be able to operate manual and power tools and equipment regularly
  • The candidates should be able to work outside in all weather conditions continuously
  • The candidates should be able to handle exposure to equipment noise occasionally
  • The candidates should be able to work in environments where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals and fertilizers occasionally
  • The candidates should be able to work in close proximity to moving traffic occasionally

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should organize and prioritize work and apply a variety of skilled maintenance techniques used in various Parks trades
  • The candidates should use industrial parks equipment, hand tools, and power equipment
  • The candidates should establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • The candidates should deal effectively with the public and outside agencies and work and operate equipment safely
  • The candidates should be able to hold a certificate in horticulture (1 year) and possess Certified Irrigation Technician Levels 1 and 2 certification (24 hours)
  • The candidates should be able to have a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should be able to substitute in a more senior position when requested

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work with or under the direction of a qualified tradesperson and plant, prune, and maintain trees
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and maintain horticultural areas and work in the greenhouse
  • The candidates should be able to renovate and maintain parks, playing fields, boulevards, and other turf areas
  • The candidates should be able to construct and maintain park equipment, hard infrastructure, and furniture, as well as install and maintain irrigation and drainage systems
  • The candidates should be able to water, fertilize, seed, and cultivate as required and grow, propagate, plant, and maintain various annuals, perennials, specialty plants, and other nursery stock and trees
  • The candidates should be able to prepare, construct, and repair hanging baskets, window boxes, and displays
  • The candidates should be able to inspect for pest and health problems, apply pest controls, and conduct soil testing and provide instructions and information to other staff
  • The candidates should be able to keep records and inventories as required and make recommendations on hard and soft landscape improvements
  • The candidates should be able to operate a variety of parks industrial equipment such as industrial trucks and tractors with attachments, and operate various hand tools and power equipment such as shovels, line trimmers, rototillers, electric shears, riding mowers, chainsaws, ditch-witches, and turf-cutters
  • The candidates should be able to occasionally respond to general inquiries from the public and other departments and perform related duties where qualified
