City of Winnipeg’s Planning, Property, and Development department oversees urban development and land management. It manages zoning, permits, and building inspections. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have enrollment/completion of a recognized green-space/turf management program
Experience: Candidates should have experience working on golf course maintenance or turf maintenance experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should be capable of making minor adjustments and repairs to gasoline/diesel engines, operating, and maintaining standard golf course equipment
  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting weights in excess of up to 50 lbs

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess the ability to pay attention to detail and ensure accuracy of work
  • The candidates should demonstrate verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with the general public in challenging situations
  • The candidates should exhibit interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment and maintain effective working relationships with staff and stakeholders
  • The candidates should have basic proficiency with computers and programs such as Word and Outlook
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the game of golf and the rules of golf
  • The candidates should be willing to be assigned to different golf courses dependent on operational requirements with duties performed dependent on facility
  • The candidates should provide CSA approved personal protective safety boots (six (6) inches above the ankle) at their own expense

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to complete assigned tasks and duties for the City of Winnipeg golf courses and able to work in a team environment and use their own judgment and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should be able to operate vehicles, equipment, and attachments safely and efficiently to perform golf maintenance functions and able to perform seasonal grass maintenance duties such as mowing and seeding, as well as all aspects of turf maintenance for the City of Winnipeg golf courses
  • The candidates should be able to cut fairways, tees, greens, and roughs as directed by the Foreman or Lead Hand throughout the golf course and clubhouse areas using riding mowers, push mowers, and weed trimmers, ensuring a high standard of presentation
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the aeration of greens and tees, spread topsoil/sand as required, and blow debris off greens and able to water greens, tees, and fairways manually and water areas of the golf course as directed by the Foreman or Lead Hand
  • The candidates should be able to assist with sodding as required and assist with fertilization of greens, tees, and aprons and able to manually rake sand traps, trim, edge, and weed sand traps as directed by the Foreman or Lead Hand
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the application of pesticides and fungicides and able to assist in the general maintenance of the grounds by watering and maintaining all flower beds, planters, and shrubs, which include weeding, planting, flower replacement, and fertilization of flower beds
  • The candidates should be able to perform cart path maintenance, which includes filling potholes, spreading gravel, and spraying weeds and able to move tee markers, maintain ball washers, and cut holes as directed by the Foreman
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for emptying all garbage/recycling bins on the golf course and around the clubhouse, using handheld litter picker to remove garbage from the parking lot, golf course, clubhouse area, and fence line
  • The candidates should be able to assist in the opening and closing of the golf courses, which includes assisting with the placement or removal of protective covers (tarps), performing general maintenance such as manually picking up branches and garbage, and mulching/blowing leaves for both opening and closing
  • The candidates should be able to service golf carts, which includes removal and installation of batteries, oil changes, cleaning, and refueling and able to perform other duties as assigned that fall within the classification
