Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Professional Accounting Designation (CA, CPA, CMA and CGA)
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in the public sector environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to maintain sustained attention to detail in checking and recording financial transactions and ensure compliance with corporate and departmental policies & procedures, as well as public sector accounting standards
  • The candidates should have an understanding of acceptable business practices and internal controls within a large corporate environment
  • The candidates should have conceptual skills to identify complex financial issues and problems and excellent analytical, problem-solving, and effective communication skills, with the ability to work independently
  • The candidates should be aware that this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, allowing flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge and experience with Excel, Google Suite, SAP (or other large enterprise systems), and other related systems within the context of work
  • The candidates should have a proficient understanding of year-end accounting close and knowledge of the preparation of financial statements of moderate complexity
  • The candidates should have excellent knowledge of corporate and departmental policies and procedures
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of public sector accounting standards, requirements, and practices
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent customer service while ensuring adherence to professional standards and be prepared for testing as part of the application process

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to record transactions in accordance with approved accounting policy or procedure
  • The candidates should be able to follow transaction processes established to ensure that appropriate controls exist to mitigate the risk of error, fraud, and misstatements
  • The candidates should be able to analyze agreements to determine the appropriate accounting treatment and assume responsibility for the accurate recording of financial data in SAP as it relates to accounts associated with the operating budget
  • The candidates should be able to provide financial support under supervision and direction to satisfy the day-to-day financial information needs of the client
  • The candidates should be able to carry out the requirements of the month-end cutoff schedule, ensuring deadlines are met and accounts are appropriately reconciled and accurately reflect the transactions for the reporting period
  • The candidates should be able to post approved month-end adjustments to SAP and perform the close process for revenue and expense accounts, ensuring that financial reporting reflects the status of the programs to date
  • The candidates should be able to perform the close process for GL accounts, reserves, and equity and prepare trial balances and prepare monthly GST reporting for the business area, ensuring that transactions are appropriately coded in SAP
  • The candidates should be able to support the preparation of non-consolidated working papers and the preparation of business area packages and provide support to senior accountants through the compilation of data and financial information and perform additional duties
