Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 1 year experience working in a similar environment, such as an Animal Shelter, Veterinary Clinic or Boarding Kennel

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work independently with little or no supervision, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative in completing tasks
  • The candidates should be physically able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position for long periods of time, which may involve physical exertion

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have previous professional experience handling cats, dogs, and other animals in a similar environment, including cleaning animal kennels and enclosures
  • The candidates should be able to read animal body language/cues to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals under their care
  • The candidates should have a good understanding of veterinarian terminology and lingo, which is considered an asset for effective communication within the veterinary setting
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved with the work assigned, ensuring a safe environment for themselves and the animals
  • The candidates should have excellent communication, conflict resolution, organization, teamwork, time management, and prioritization skills to effectively manage responsibilities in a dynamic environment
  • The candidates should be proficient with Google applications, as these tools may be used for various administrative tasks related to the position
  • The candidates should have a valid Intermediate First Aid certification, which is required prior to or upon commencing employment, to ensure readiness to handle emergencies
  • The candidates should undergo a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton as part of the hiring process
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive, and service-minded style, contributing positively to the work environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide animals with food and water, ensuring that proper dietary conditions are met according to established guidelines and schedules
  • The candidates should be able to ensure animals have clean, dry bedding and provide enrichment activities such as walking, handling toys, and distributing treats to promote the well-being of the animals
  • The candidates should be able to conduct routine checks throughout the day to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in animal kennels, promptly removing debris and waste
  • The candidates should be able to notify the Registered Veterinary Technologist promptly if any issues arise with an animal’s health or behavior, such as vomiting or lack of appetite, to ensure timely intervention and care
  • The candidates should be able to clean and disinfect animal cages, kennels, and quarantine areas regularly to prevent the spread of disease and maintain a sanitary environment
  • The candidates should be able to follow proper disease protocols to minimize the risk of disease transmission among animals and adhere to biosecurity measures to safeguard animal health
  • The candidates should be able to provide assistance to veterinary staff as needed, including transferring animals between locations and providing support during euthanasia procedures, ensuring humane treatment and care
  • The candidates should be able to undertake snow removal of the Animal Care and Control Centre (ACCC) premises if required to maintain safe and accessible facilities
  • The candidates should be able to conduct minor interior maintenance of the facility and equipment, addressing issues promptly to ensure a safe and functional environment for animals and staff
  • The candidates should be able to monitor inventory levels of maintenance, office, and animal care supplies and ensure that supplies are adequately stocked to support daily operations and emergency situations
