Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have complete Grade 10 and the Assistant Cook Certification program
Experience: Candidates should have one year of cooking experience in an institution, health care, restaurant, hospitality setting, or related organization

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to organize work efficiently, work under deadline pressure and follow directions and be self-motivated
  • The candidates should be able to operate and use all equipment and utensils safely,  follow recipes accurately, control waste effectively and workplace hygiene, health, and safety standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate safe work practices, work as part of a team and be flexible to changing job demands.
  • The candidates should demonstrate alertness, dependability, and commitment, meet the physical requirements of the job and be self-motivated and self-directed

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Canada Food Guide, Ontario Public Health Act (Health Protection and Promotion Act: Food Premises), Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, Food Premises regulations, and the “Sanitation Code” for Canada’s food industry
  • The candidates should have experience in the preparation of bulk food, prepare and cook vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, soups, and sauces, experience with elementary dessert, general knowledge of buffet preparation.
  • The candidates should be familiar with preparatory methods of entrées, knowledge of food inventory control, knowledge of the safe operation of kitchen tools.
  • The candidates should be aware of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers and respect residents’ rights and privacy and be strong team players

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist the cook in preparing all food served, including general menu items, special diets, meals-on-wheels, and Day Care Resident meals
  • The candidates should be able to ensure all food preparation follows Public Health regulations, the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, and the Food Premises Act
  • The candidates should be able to prioritize resident safety and engagement while preparing and serving meals
  • The candidates should be able to support the planning, coordination, and implementation of food, nutrition, and environmental activities in a municipal long-term care facility
