Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed Grade 12 education
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 5 years of driving experience with a clean driving record free of demerit points and including ideally a minimum 3 years of relevant customer service experience including direct contact with the public and dealing with a diverse population

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to adapt/react to changes in operating conditions/environment, operate in a highly diverse cultural community, and remain calm in stressful situations
  • The candidates should be able to multi-task, solve problems, make decisions, exercise sound judgment, and work with minimum direct supervision in a team environment
  • The candidates should be able to use a radio and microphone effectively, call out stops as per the CTA directive, and operate a bus in high-density traffic in the downtown core
  • The candidates should be able to react and deal with emergency situations as they arise, talk to and assist passengers while safely operating a bus, and project a positive and professional image at all times through personal appearance and conduct, while also being able to act independently
  • The candidates should be able to communicate clearly in writing, in person, and by using corporate communications technologies, such as 2-way radio, etc.
  • The candidates should be able to deliver excellent customer service at all times and deal with all situations in a professional manner by remaining calm and self-controlled when dealing with difficult situations, and cooperating with Transit Supervisors and other City of Ottawa personnel to meet customers’ transit needs
  • The candidates should be available and able to work overtime, and work a variety of scheduled shifts including split shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays, as per the collective agreement
  • The candidates should be able to sit for long periods in the driver’s seat, wearing a seat belt, and manipulate controls independently or simultaneously
  • The candidates should be capable of performing overhead tasks with both arms and engaging in constant twisting and neck rotation to check mirrors and attend to passengers
  • The candidates should demonstrate proficiency in performing MTO pre-trip inspections, involving various physical movements such as walking, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, and twisting
  • The candidates should possess skill in medium-duty lifting, constant gripping, pulling, and pushing, as well as bending, stooping, crouching, and twisting to ensure safety and functionality, including manipulation of dual foot controls

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be individuals with public urban transit experience, which is an asset, and individuals who have completed a Defensive Driving course or related, which is an asset
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about City of Ottawa landmarks and locations, possess knowledge of transit fares and pass structure, and have knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act
  • The candidates should have knowledge of/experience using portable communications technologies, such as 2-way radio
  • The candidates should be attentive to detail and able to adhere to specific detailed procedures, possess good written communication skills, and have a basic understanding of and ability to use computers
  • The candidates should be persuasive and tactful with excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, and be able to read and understand trip dockets
  • The candidates should have various language requirements, as some locations may require English only, French only, or bilingual competencies. Some positions may require English oral, reading, and writing skills, while others may require French oral, reading, and writing skills
  • The candidates will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction; police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted
  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with 0 demerit points accumulated
  • The candidates must be able to pass the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) medical exam required to obtain a class “C” license prior to hire

  • The candidates should be able to operate City of Ottawa buses in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and corporate policy

  • The candidates should be able to perform the roles of Operator/Bilingual Sightseeing and Charter Sightseeing temporarily when required
  • The candidates should be able to perform the role of Operator/Platform Instructor temporarily when required
  • The candidates should be able to ensure on-time, efficient, effective, and cost-effective rapid transit service
  • The candidates should be able to maintain professionalism and courtesy in all interactions with customers and colleagues
  • The candidates should be able to adapt to the growing and diverse needs of the City of Ottawa
  • The candidates should be able to adhere to relevant regulations and policies governing transit operations
