Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should be entering their final year of, or have recently graduated from, a post-secondary program in journalism or another related field
Experience: Candidates don’t need experience, training will be provided

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate strong potential for producing journalism marked by intelligent observation, command of facts, understanding of context, and clarity of expression
  • The candidates should demonstrate the interest and ability to practice daily journalism. Preference will be given to candidates who could potentially work at CBC Edmonton at the end of the scholarship
  • The candidates should have an abundance of original story ideas that will deepen CBC’s connections with communities in Edmonton and Northern Alberta and elevate a range of voices
  • The candidates should have the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • The candidates should understand the diverse and changing population in Edmonton and the importance of reflecting all communities in content
  • The candidates should possess a strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture
  • The candidates should possess a valid driver’s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to split their time between working as a multi-platform reporter (digital, radio, and television) and an associate producer in current affairs radio
  • The candidates should be able to pitch and chase original story ideas, write and package stories, prepare scripts, gather and edit audio, present material on-air, and research and conduct interviews
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for their own accommodation and living expenses
  • The candidates should be able to receive training and orientation to the news operations
  • The candidates should be able to be assigned a mentor within the CBC Edmonton newsroom, who will provide them with ongoing feedback
  • The candidates should be able to have an opportunity to work in various roles in the newsroom to build skills and experience
