City of Toronto’s Shelter and Support Services division addresses homelessness and housing insecurity by managing shelters and support programs. It provides emergency shelter, housing assistance, and support services to vulnerable populations in the city. It collaborates with community partners to meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, contributing to social welfare and stability in Toronto. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have successful completion of the Food Handler/Safety Awareness Program offered by Toronto Public Health
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in preparing and cooking food in a large scale food service setting

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should exhibit the ability to provide effective work direction to kitchen staff
  • The candidates should be capable of preparing and maintaining minor statistical reports and performing basic mathematical calculations
  • The candidates should be able to lift heavy cooking equipment and supplies

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be a graduate of a 2-year college cooking program from a recognized institution or hold a Red Seal Certificate and/or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • The candidates should have completed a Food Service Worker certificate from a registered college and possess knowledge of the operation and care of kitchen equipment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of nutrition/therapeutic diets and sanitation code, hygiene, and safe food handling techniques
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any other regulations that apply to this type of work, as well as knowledge of WHMIS legislation and HACCP procedures
  • The candidates should have the ability to follow oral and written instructions, as well as the ability to write notes, directions, and/or reports as required
  • The candidates should possess the ability and willingness to provide a service that enhances the dignity and respects the cultural and racial diversity of HIPS clients and staff

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to participate in the ongoing quality improvement of food products produced and able to collect information on leftovers/shortage of food items and make recommendations to adjust production sheets
  • The candidates should be able to monitor food supplies in the stockroom, rotate them as required, and inform the Supervisor and Food Services Workers of shortages
  • The candidates should be able to review the daily menu, check supplies, and plan preparation and able to prepare food and ingredients to be cooked or baked by cleaning, cutting, portioning, measuring, and mixing, using a variety of kitchen utensils, knives, and large quantity cooking equipment such as mixers, steamers, ovens, combi-therm ovens, stoves, meat slicers, vats, roasting pans, and fryers
  • The candidates should be able to prepare ovens and steamers, ensuring correct temperature, and pressure and be able to cook food and bake desserts, using standard recipes (e.g., special dietary requirements) and modifying consistency according to the special needs of client groups (e.g., pureeing and mincing), and portion and decorate desserts as required
  • The candidates should be able to portion and place food in containers according to production sheets for delivery by Food Services Worker and able to ensure food is cooked, prepared, stored, and served at proper temperatures as required and record temperature as required for Food and Equipment
  • The candidates should be able to prepare cold food such as salads, sandwiches, sandwich fillings, meat/fruit trays, label and retain daily food samples and provide work direction to Food Services Workers by giving instructions, providing training on new tasks, and providing additional information related to meals, preparation, and/or service
  • The candidates should be able to retrieve food supplies and label and store leftovers and direct Food Services Workers on these duties as required and able to requisition food supplies from Materials Manager Assistant on a daily basis or retrieve them from storage areas and inform the supervisor of food supplies and other items required
  • The candidates should be able to notify the Supervisor of any equipment malfunctions or Health & Safety issues and perform calculations to prepare statistical reports on food usage if required
  • The candidates should be able to answer telephones, take messages, secure work area locking doors, windows, and freezers
  • The candidates should be able to clean and sanitize work surfaces, equipment, and knives after use and deliver, arrange, and replenish food to service areas as required
  • The candidates should be able to make recommendations to adjust standardized recipes and scale recipes, and may place food orders within budget guidelines using a computer
  • The candidates should be able to deliver, arrange, and replenish food to the service area and may assist with counter service
