Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration, Business Administration, or Public Safety, or other related fields
Experience: Candidates should have 5 or more years of increasingly responsible experience in the fire service, including experiences in a supervisory capacity, or a combination of training and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of business analytics and evidence-based decision-making
  • The candidates should be able to exhibit strong time management and cost containment skills in directing day-to-day operations and managing projects
  • The candidates should be able to work under pressure, stress, and meet tight deadlines

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be individuals with extensive experience and exposure in a senior-level management and incident command role
  • The candidates should possess a Class 3-4 with Air Endorsement Driver’s License valid in the Province of B.C
  • The candidates should have the NPFA 1021 Fire Officer 1 certification
  • The candidates should be individuals who hold the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 3 certification

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to establish and maintain highly effective relationships with City officials, department heads, staff, and the general public
  • The candidates should be able to apply a continuous improvement model and recognize, evaluate, make recommendations, and assign resources
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and present presentations and demonstrations to internal and external contacts
  • The candidates should be able to prepare complex reports regarding any aspect of the fire department or city business and present the findings in a logical and ethical manner
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate effective communication, presentation, negotiation, leadership, and general management skills. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills exhibiting tact and diplomacy
  • The candidates should be able to lead and plan departmental activities, motivate personnel, and foster relationships in a composite model department. Ability to delegate duties and responsibilities when appropriate
  • The candidates should be able to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of team members, including the ability to motivate, mentor, and enable the career development of team members
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate thorough knowledge and experience in the application of modern firefighting and rescue standards and fire prevention methods, techniques, and procedures, as well as the operation and maintenance of all equipment and apparatus
  • The candidates should be able to possess a thorough knowledge of Fire Department rules, regulations, standing orders, policies, and applicable City and Provincial Fire Commissioner Codes, Bylaws, and Acts
