Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of University degree
Experience: Candidates should have minimum 3 years’ progressive experience in health and safety
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and in a team environment
- The candidates should have a proven ability to take initiative and use sound judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information
- The candidates should have the ability and willingness to travel between worksites, as necessary, utilizing reliable, safe, and efficient methods of transportation to perform the job
- The candidates should have some flexibility in hours of work required to support operations
- The candidates should have proven disability management experience with the ability to support processes in a unionized environment
- The candidates should have strong attention to detail and the ability to successfully manage time with competing priorities
- The candidates should have a passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have post-secondary education (3-year diploma required) in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience contractor safety, construction safety, ergonomics, confined space, working at heights, with municipal experience
- The candidates should possess comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, WSIB Policies or processes, and Ontario Human Rights Code
- The candidates should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal or written) with the ability to maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of collaborators and audiences
- The candidates should have excellent facilitation skills and the ability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- The candidates should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills to conduct assessments and evaluations with the ability to make recommendations based on findings and research
- The candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and have the ability to learn new systems, such as PeopleSoft and learning management systems
- The candidates should hold a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), or Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation
- The candidates should have a strong commitment to delivering quality customer service and demonstrate a commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to assist the City in fostering a physically and psychologically safe workplace through continuous improvement of Health, Safety, and Wellness Programs or Initiatives and develop, implement, and maintain the City’s Health, Safety and Wellness policies, procedures, training programs, and Health, Safety, and Wellness (HSW) Talks in accordance with applicable legislation and best practices
- The candidates should be able to play a key role in health and safety program and procedure development, acting as a resource to City employees, leadership, unions, and Joint Health and Safety Committees to ensure legislative compliance, best practices, and minimize occupational risks
- The candidates should be able to deliver expert advice and guidance to supervisors on workplace physical and psychological health, safety, mental health, wellness, and related employee supports to promote a healthy and safe workplace and provide guidance to divisions in developing or improving safe work procedures, such as standard operating procedures
- The candidates should be able to lead the execution of Health, Safety, and Wellness projects and initiatives, overseeing planning through implementation and conduct site audits, inspections, risk assessments, and job safety analyses to minimize health and safety risks, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practices
- The candidates should be able to assist in developing Health, Safety, and Wellness training programs, identifying needs, facilitating various training sessions, and coordinating with external providers
- The candidates should be able to provide expert direction on work refusals, critical injury or fatality investigations, inspections, and Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) orders in collaboration with management and joint health and safety representatives
- The candidates should be able to conduct ergonomic assessments, physical demands analysis, and coordinate third-party assessments to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and support accommodation processes and support the City’s Joint Health and Safety Committees, providing guidance and expertise
- The candidates should be able to conduct research and provide recommendations to ensure the City’s compliance with legislation and initiatives from external regulators and and coordinate health and safety-focused events
- The candidates should be able to support the City’s disability management processes and provide backup for occupational and non-occupational claims handled by the Health Safety and Wellness Consultant and Health Safety and Wellness Specialist
