Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have current registration in the Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner) with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required
Experience: Candidates should have 3 + years nursing experience as a NP, with mental health and addiction expertise preferred

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be registered as either a Registered Social Worker, Registered Social Service Worker, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Practical Nurse, or Registered Occupational Therapist and be in good standing, adhering to all standards of practice as per the College
  • The candidates should have clinical knowledge and experience in the application of clinical therapeutic techniques
  • The candidates should be certified in the following safety courses: Safety Care, First Aid and CPR, Suicide Intervention (ASIST), and Mental Health First Aid, as well as Use of Force training
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., the Mental Health Act), the use of psychotropic medication, psychiatric diagnosis, and formulation of a mental health assessment for a diverse age group and population
  • The candidates should have knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Community and Aboriginal Based Services
  • The candidates must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or verification that they are unable to be vaccinated
  • The candidates must have access to a reliable personal vehicle
  • The candidates should hold a current valid class ‘G’ driver’s license
  • The candidates must undergo a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check)
  • The candidates should have actual life experience and/or lived experience with mental illness or addictions is considered an asset
  • The candidates possess bilingualism

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to utilize a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for patients, including health assessments and diagnosis of medical and cognitive problems, developing and implementing a plan of care, and providing health counseling and emotional support in the areas of health promotion and the prevention of illness, injury, and complications
  • The candidates should be able to work in collaboration with consulting physicians to facilitate early assessment and intervention for patients requiring consults
  • The candidates should be able to support the management of patients in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, conducting comprehensive nursing/medical history, physical and psychosocial assessments of the patients’ status
  • The candidates should be able to utilize established care paths and order sets to guide care practices for the patient population from admission through to discharge
  • The candidates should be able to support the health team by completing comprehensive initial patient assessments and establishing individualized treatment and care plans for complex patients in collaboration with physicians and psychiatrists
  • The candidates should be able to assist in coordinating care with patients, families, and communities and create and maintain a climate for and a commitment to healing within a therapeutic relationship
  • The candidates should be able to document and communicate the patient’s beliefs, values, and wishes, honoring them as much as possible given respect for others and legal, ethical, and professional boundaries
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate sensitivity to culture, situation, and family dynamics and maximize the patient’s participation and control in their own treatment, providing information and support for decision-making
  • The candidates should be able to facilitate change directed by the patient, mapped out by mutually developed goals, and assess problems rapidly, noting and documenting significant changes
  • The candidates should be able to document according to professional standards, the principles of clear communication, and Homewood policy and procedure
