Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should be registered as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Experience: Candidates should possess a Nurse Practitioner specialty experience and certificate in primary health care or adult care

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate clinical expertise and assessment skills to elicit, interpret, and utilize information from inmates and other sources
  • The candidates should be able to respond to emergency situations and implement appropriate interventions
  • The candidates should be capable of evaluating responses to treatment and modifying the treatment plan to achieve established goals
  • The candidates should possess leadership skills to coordinate and deliver primary health care services, embed quality improvement, and lead consultation and engagement with healthcare staff and partners, as well as internal and external stakeholders
  • The candidates should have knowledge of illness/disease theory, health promotion and prevention, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic and laboratory testing, evidence-based practice, and current treatment modalities
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of mental health and addiction treatment options
  • The candidates should be able to interpret and apply legislation to practice (i.e., Health Care Consent Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, etc.)
  • The candidates should be effective communicators and capable of presenting information in a clear and concise manner.
  • The candidates should be able to document care and progress by preparing progress notes, written treatment plans, and clinical summaries
  • The candidates should be adaptable in their communication skills to provide information and health teaching to a diverse population
  • The candidates should have the ability to advocate for and encourage patient participation in their plan of care
  • The candidates should be capable of supporting patients in the implementation and modification of their treatment plan

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assess, diagnose, and prescribe treatment with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention
  • The candidates should be able to communicate diagnosis and treatment plan options
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with an inter-professional team in the development of the patient plan of care, and to develop and implement strategies that promote health and prevent illness
  • The candidates should be able to advocate for and facilitate the principles of self-care by involving offenders in their own plan of care
  • The candidates should be able to act as a resource for patients, staff, and external stakeholders
  • The candidates should be able to respond to emergency situations and implement appropriate interventions
  • The candidates should be able to practice in accordance with College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and Ministry expectations
  • The candidates should be able to practice in accordance with the security requirements of the institution
