Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a grade 12 education or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have road maintenance and concrete experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of working in adverse road and weather conditions
  • The candidates should be capable of considerable physical effort, agility, and possess the skill and ability to perform the duties listed above
  • The candidates should be physically fit and able to complete labor-intensive work, including heavy lifting
  • The candidates should be available and able to work shifts including weekends, and nights, with a crew as well as independently with minimal supervision

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a general knowledge of general construction practices and techniques and should exhibit excellent customer service skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • The candidates should have knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, including W.H.M.I.S. legislation, 70 Hour Regulation, Book 7 Traffic Control, and Minimum Maintenance Standards
  • The candidates should have working knowledge of computer skills utilizing web-based search engines, tablets, smartphones, GPS tools, and Windows functions
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to adapt to and train for new technology developments and software products in a continuous improvement work model
  • The candidates should be able to understand and follow detailed procedures, instructions, and take directions, accurately completing various logs, documents, inspection forms, and other administrative information
  • The candidates should possess a valid Class D license with a Z endorsement in good standing
  • The candidates should have demonstrated experience operating a CVOR vehicle for more than 3 years

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Supervisor of Operational Services or Lead hand, through oversight provided by Departmental Supervisors
  • The candidates should be able to perform laboring and/or driving on a daily basis to complete maintenance/repairs for Operational Services programs such as road maintenance, sidewalk repair/replacement, bridge maintenance, litter/debris clean up, overland drainage maintenance, winter maintenance, Minimum Maintenance Standard inspections
  • The candidates should be able to perform road and right of way maintenance activities contingent with council approved services delivered by Operational Services Department
  • The candidates should be able to perform road repairs (skin patch, potholes, overlay, road cuts), manual labor (shovelling, hand tools), and traffic control (flagging, set up, tear down)
  • The candidates should be able to perform concrete repairs (sidewalk replacement/repair, curb) and ground restoration repair (utility cut)
  • The candidates should be able to perform litter/bulk/debris pick up and accident/incident response (barricades, debris clean up)
  • The candidates should be able to conduct culvert and ditching maintenance, drainage inspections (Dike, hot spot), winter maintenance, and monitoring of river readings
  • The candidates should be able to operate various equipment (loaders, snow plow with wing, trackless, tractor, snow blower) for snow removal and material application on roadways, sidewalks, and pathways
  • The candidates should be able to perform laboring duties such as shovelling and material applications on sidewalks
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job
