Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have a dental hygiene diploma or bachelor program
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of experience in relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should spend a significant portion of their day bending and standing in awkward positions while performing patient assessments or providing care/treatment
  • The candidates should be capable of moving and lifting heavy dental equipment during patient assessments and care
  • The candidates should be prepared to travel to other communities (approximately two weeks per year) with heavy baggage holding dental equipment
  • The candidates should know that they may be exposed to communicable diseases, blood and bodily fluids, and hazardous materials (sharps, toxic cleaning, and sterilizing solutions), which can result in potential health risks
  • The candidates should provide training, advice, and assessment using specialized equipment, treatment tools, and techniques including but not limited to sharps, x-ray equipment, various drills, air/water syringe, suction tools, various hand tools, and sterilizer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge, skills, and abilities to work within the clinical scope of the Dental Auxiliaries Act and be eligible to be licensed with the NWT Professional Registrar as a Dental Hygienist
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of and an ability to apply dental therapy processes (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) and current dental practice to ensure that the patient’s physical, emotional, and educational needs
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the importance of confidentiality and the ability to keep personal and medical information private and confidential at all times
  • The candidates should have knowledge of oral anatomy (head & neck) in relation to local anesthesia considerations and techniques for safe and effective patient treatment and knowledge of oral anatomy in relation to muscle, nervous, and circulatory systems
  • The candidates should have knowledge of current universal precautions and appropriate and effective infection control measures in relation to the clinical environment
  • The candidates should have proficiency in working with internet research, word-processing, and spreadsheet software, internet, and email
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop and interpret dental radiographs to assist in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, case presentation and have interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
  • The candidates should have knowledge of education principles related to both adult and child learners is necessary to develop and deliver subject-specific training and development

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide direct and independent dental therapy services to patients of the NTHSSA within a multi-disciplinary setting and support activities related to the above responsibility
  • The candidates should be able to develop, coordinate, and facilitate education/teaching based on the needs of patients and other health care providers
  • The candidates should be able to advocate for practice environments that have the organizational and resource allocations necessary for safe, competent, and ethical clinical dental care
  • The candidates should be able to communicate with other members of the health care team regarding the dental health care of patients to provide continuity of care and promote collaborative efforts directed toward quality patient care
  • The candidates should be able to effectively operate and maintain equipment by troubleshooting and ensuring appropriate maintenance and repairs on dental equipment

Benefits:

  • The candidates will get an annual Northern Allowance of $6,903 for Fort Smith and $20,723 for Norman Wells
