Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High school graduation and Fourth Class Power Engineering Trades Certification (2 years) – or approved equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have 1 year related experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy objects often and capable of working from ladders or scaffolding occasionally
  • The candidates should be willing to work in confined spaces, although this is a rare occurrence and short periods of intense concentration while working on complex maintenance systems should be expected occasionally
  • The candidates should be able to focus on a variety of source data and computers for short periods, although this is a rare requirement and should be comfortable working in an aquatic recreation facility
  • The candidates should be prepared to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to equipment noise, heat, dust, and fumes, which is often the case
  • The candidates should be willing to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to hazardous chemicals, which is often necessary and should be prepared to obtain criminal record clearance as required for the role

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to organize and prioritize work effectively and should be proficient in using hand tools and power equipment
  • The candidates should understand and apply techniques regarding the operation and maintenance of water treatment, filtration equipment, HVAC systems, boilers, and applicable safety standards and acts
  • The candidates should have a basic level of operation of a personal computer and a working knowledge of energy management systems and should be capable of performing building and equipment repairs and maintenance
  • The candidates should maintain accurate records of their work activities and should establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and should prioritize safety and be able to work safely on job sites
  • The candidates should have a Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate (8 hours) and have possession of a BCRPA Pool Operator Level 1 & 2 certificate (32 hours)
  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have proficiency in the use of the SCOTT Air Pack System

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate, maintain, and repair swimming pool filtration systems, water chemistry, building systems, and components, including boilers and HVAC systems, at Crystal Pool and Royal Athletic Park, in accordance with required health and safety standards and acts
  • The candidates should be able to operate, repair, and maintain water treatment, filtration, and heating systems and their components for various pool systems within established standards. This includes monitoring, adjusting, and recording water chemistry, cleaning and repairing filtration units, filling chemical feeders, and servicing and repairing pumps, motors, and related equipment
  • The candidates should be able to change chlorine gas cylinders according to safety procedures and maintain and repair gas chlorine feed systems
  • The candidates should be able to operate and maintain building structures, operating systems, and contents to ensure the safety of staff and members of the public. This includes monitoring and servicing air handling units (HVAC systems), fans, dampers, filters, heat pumps, refrigeration units, boilers, pneumatic controls, and energy control systems, as well as programming and monitoring computerized energy management systems and calibrating remote sensors
  • The candidates should be able to perform a variety of technical maintenance tasks to maintain and repair pool and building equipment, such as diving boards, ladders, sauna, steam/ozone generators, steam rooms, exercise equipment, plumbing fixtures, handicap lifts, ceiling tiles, pool floors, concession equipment, lights, and touch-up painting.
  • The candidates should be able to maintain and refine the preventative maintenance program and schedules for Crystal Pool, assess the need for supplies and equipment, and provide all recommendations to the supervisor. Additionally, they should operate a vehicle to pick up and deliver parts and supplies
  • The candidates should be able to repair, maintain, and calibrate a variety of safety devices and alarm systems for the detection of hazardous materials, such as chlorine, ozone, and boiler malfunctions. They should also respond to alarms and emergencies and take the necessary measures to ensure public and staff safety
  • The candidates should be able to set up chairs, tables, and equipment for special events and activities and able to perform related duties where qualified
