Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have University degree or post-secondary education in a legal program (Paralegal/Court and Tribunal Agent)
Experience: Candidates should have five years prosecution experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be licensed by the Law Society of Ontario
  • The candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in a legal environment, with at least one year of experience as a Prosecutor or Defence
  • The candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of experience prosecuting Municipal offences such as those under the Building Code Act, F.P.P.A, Planning Act, and by-laws
  • The candidates should possess exceptional communication skills along with superior report writing abilities, with proficiency in the MS Office Suite

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist the Manager of Prosecutions in the proper administration of justice by conducting prosecutions and appeals of offences under provincial and federal statutes and municipal by-laws
  • The candidates should be able to represent the Corporation of the City of Brampton at hearings and perform administrative duties related to the prosecution of offences
  • The candidates should be able to provide general legal services to the Corporation in the areas of prosecution, before administrative tribunals, Small Claims Court litigation, by-law drafting, interpretation, and collections
  • The candidates should be able to conduct prosecutions from initiation to final disposition at appeal of offences under provincial and federal statutes and municipal by-laws, and represent the City at various hearings
  • The candidates should be able to perform legal research and file review, prepare legal arguments and settlement negotiations related to prosecutions
  • The candidates should be able to draft grounds of appeal, review court transcripts, and ensure all documents are properly before the appellate court
  • The candidates should be able to conduct appeals before the Ontario Court of Justice for the City, as either appellant or respondent
  • The candidates should be able to compile reports to various levels of staff and able to liaise on a continuous basis with Courts Administration staff, Peel Regional Police, legal counsel, and municipal staff
  • The candidates should be able to liaise through the Manager of Prosecutions with the Deputy City Solicitor, City Solicitor, Commissioner of Corporate Services, and elected officials
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for the carriage of a number of Small Claims Court cases and able to conduct trials, motions, and appeal hearings as appropriate
  • The candidates should be able to attend Ontario Court of Justice for matters such as appeals and motions and able to attend tribunals and boards (i.e., Ontario Municipal Board, Property Standards Appeal Tribunal, Brampton Appeal Tribunal) on behalf of the City
