The Ottawa Police Department’s Department of Serious & Organized Crime plays a pivotal role in combating complex criminal activities. This department employs specialized units and advanced investigative techniques to disrupt criminal networks. The Ottawa Police Department’s Serious & Organized Crime division serves as a frontline defense against sophisticated criminal threats in the region. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have successful completion of a four (4) year university degree within any of the following disciplines: Criminology, Social Science, Geography, Data Science, or a related discipline
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the last 5 years, including conducting data analysis leveraging statistical analysis, geographic information systems, academic literature databases, applied research methods, evaluation of qualitative and quantitative information, report writing, and critical thinking skills

  • The candidates should have knowledge of relevant criminological, criminal justice, and crime prevention theories
  • The candidates should possess time management skills with the ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet tight timelines
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of i2 Analyst Notebook, ESRI ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Acrobat, and PowerBI
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of open-source research methods and strategies
  • The candidates should have intermediate to advanced level knowledge of MS Office 365 (Excel / Access / Outlook / Teams / Word / PowerPoint / SharePoint)
  • The candidates should expect that work is normally performed in a standard open office environment with minimal adverse working conditions and limited public access
  • The candidates should be prepared for the possibility of travel between OPS sites, which may be required
  • The candidates should ideally possess a Master’s degree or post-graduate certificate in a related discipline
  • The candidates should have certification or formal training in Project Management is desirable
  • The candidates should have fluency in oral, reading, and writing French or other languages is desired
  • The candidates should have experience using PowerBI, i2 Analyst Notebook, and computer programming languages would be advantageous

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide research and analytical support to organizational priorities under the direction of the Team Lead Operational Intelligence Analysis
  • The candidates should be able to support the continuous improvement of the analytic capacity for crime intelligence analysis
  • The candidates should be able to conduct public safety and cross-industry research using internal and open-source databases, academic, and industry content
  • The candidates should be able to conduct standard or ad-hoc queries of internal and external systems, extract appropriate information, and compile statistics as required in response to requests from police personnel and external stakeholders
  • The candidates should be able to determine the best method of conveying research results for clients and prepare analytical reports
  • The candidates should be able to disseminate information in a timely manner and according to established procedures and legislative guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to perform data entry, data cleaning, transformation, and quality control to ensure data accuracy and reliability
  • The candidates should be able to prepare reports, infographics, presentations, or research briefs
  • The candidates should be able to follow up on directives, inquiries, and correspondence to ensure they have been dealt with appropriately
  • The candidates should be able to consider the impact of demographics, economic, social, political, and technological trends on community safety
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with internal sections and external clients to identify crime analytical requirements and areas for improvement
  • The candidates should be able to conduct ongoing best-practices research on various strategic and operational topics pertinent to crime analysis
  • The candidates should be able to assist in the development and refinement of crime metrics and advanced reporting solutions
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the preparation of documentation and communication
  • The candidates should be able to undertake in-depth analysis and exploratory analysis appropriate to organizational needs to uncover new areas of development and make recommendations as required
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as required or directed
