Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of directly related experience in commercial landscape, horticulture and/or tree maintenance including operating industrial landscape maintenance equipment and tools

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy equipment and materials occasionally and able to operate a variety of industrial-rated equipment and vehicles
  • The candidates should be capable of short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment occasionally
  • The candidates should be comfortable with exposure to dust, jarring, equipment noise, and vibration occasionally
  • The candidates should be willing to work outside in all weather conditions continuously
  • The candidates should be prepared to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, and biohazards occasionally
  • The candidates should be able to handle exposure to traffic occasionally and capable of repairing and performing routine maintenance on equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out job-related instructions effectively
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors
  • The candidates should be skilled in dealing effectively with the public and outside agencies
  • The candidates should prioritize safety and demonstrate the ability to work safely on job sites
  • The candidates should possess a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removing refuse and debris it also prepare, plant, and maintain flower, shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees
  • The candidates should be able to construct and maintain pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation, furniture, playground equipment, ponds, and streams and maintain tree wells, tree grates, and tree guards
  • The candidates should be able to flag and direct traffic around equipment and operations and in public laneways and to water trees, baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes
  • The candidates should be able to record accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, time sheets, and tree watering or maintenance records and to collect data for the purpose of updating inventory and data collection apps
  • The candidates should be able to provide instructions and information to other staff as required and respond to general inquiries from the public and other departments regarding park maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to operate various industrial-sized trucks, including tanker trucks, aerial lift trucks, trucks with trailers, hook lift trucks, and leaf vacuum trucks with related equipment
  • The candidates should be able to operate industrial tractors equipped with turf/horticultural attachments and to operate small cranes for loading and unloading materials and equipment and to operate brush chippers, loaders, and stump grinders
  • The candidates should be able to operate commercial ride-on mowers to maintain grass in public spaces, requiring proficiency in adjusting and maintaining reel and blade height and in loading and unloading the mower from the trailer
  • The candidates should be able to operate various light power equipment, such as light rollers, light all-terrain utility vehicles, concrete mixers, small vibrating tampers various small power tools, chainsaws, power pole saws, push mowers, rototillers, edgers, blowers and line
  • The candidates should be able to use various hand tools related to park maintenance and to conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance to vehicles, tools, and equipment and to grind stumps, chip brush, and with direct supervision, perform light pruning and to maintain cemetery grounds and assist with interments
