Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of completed Grade 12 education
Experience: Candidates should have at least two years of experience as a lifeguard and instructor

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to direct and provide leadership and support to staff in implementing lifeguard and instructional standards, skills, and techniques
  • The candidates should be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisors, and the public
  • The candidates should be able to work independently with minimal supervision,  communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with supervisors, staff, and the public
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate skills and techniques in accordance with instructor and lifeguard program standards
  • The candidates should be able to maintain the fitness level required by the City of Saskatoon Inservice Guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to exercise good judgement in resolving issues that arise during program delivery or lifeguard duties

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess valid CPR/AED Certification Level C, possess a valid National Lifeguard Service Certification (Pool)
  • The candidates should possess a valid Lifesaving Society Instructor Certification, possess either an Aquatic Emergency Care Award or Standard First Aid Certification
  • The candidates should possess either National Lifeguard (N.L.A.) Instructor or Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer Certification, with the ability to obtain the other within 12 months
  • The candidates should possess, or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire, a Standard First Aid/CPR Course Instructor Certification
  • The candidates should have knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, first aid, emergency procedures, and instructional techniques, methods, and practices.

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide guidance, coaching, training, development, and monitoring of the technical skills of lifeguard and instruction staff in accordance with technical standards, skills, and knowledge requirements
  • The candidates should be able to mentor staff by providing lifeguards and instructors with ongoing feedback and evaluations to develop technical aquatic skills
  • The candidates should be able to provide technical advice and support for aquatic-related programming to the program staff
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the development and delivery of lifeguard and instructor orientation and in-service training programs and resources assist with the development of lifeguard and instructor evaluation procedures and practices
  • The candidates should be able to provide instruction and safeguard public admission and rental group activities in accordance with established lifeguard and instructor standards, skills, and knowledge,
  • The candidates should be able to participate in training programs, conferences, and workshops established to maintain fitness levels and uphold lifeguard and instructor standards
  • The candidates should be able to provide direction and assistance during emergency situations, provide aquatic-related education and training tools to aquatic staff, program participants, and the public
  • The candidates should be able to provide recertification clinics for lifeguard and instructor staff, and perform other related duties
