Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Doctoral Degree in Ethics, Philosophy, or Moral Theology
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience conducting clinical ethics consultations and delivering health ethics education

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess self-awareness and recognition of personal and intellectual biases
  • The candidates should be able to manage and prioritize complex and diverse workloads effectively

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a terminal degree in a vocation related to bioethics medicine, nursing, law, social work, along with a master’s level degree in bioethics
  • The candidates should have completed a fellowship or residency program in clinical ethics and completed the Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certification (HEC-C)
  • The candidates should have experience and proficiency in using systematic methods of reasoning to analyze value conflicts and develop, weigh, and balance moral arguments and counterarguments
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of health ethics literature and fundamentals and demonstrate excellence in developing and fostering interpersonal work relationships, contributing to collaborative and respectful working environments
  • The candidates should have a track record of identifying, supporting, and implementing workplace changes that enhance effectiveness and build ethics capacity
  • The candidates should demonstrate a predisposition to self-effacement and the ability to set aside personal interests for the greater good in patient care, team, and organizational settings
  • The candidates should exhibit intellectual humility, recognition of personal and professional fallibility, and an understanding of the potential limitations of ethics expertise and consultants
  • The candidates should have skills and knowledge in techniques of mediation, facilitation, or conflict resolution, outstanding verbal communication and presentation skills and possess exceptional written communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work closely with the Executive Director, Clinical Ethics Services, and AHS Clinical Ethicists to identify and implement initiatives that enhance ethical planning and delivery of healthcare across the province
  • The candidates should be able to conduct and facilitate consultations to address ethical issues, moral conflict, and distress arising in patient care
  • The candidates should be able to plan, coordinate, and deliver ethics education and training to clinicians, support staff, administrators, patients, and families
  • The candidates should be able to assist in the review and development of guidelines and organizational practices that have significant ethical implications
  • The candidates should be able to provide support for Alberta Health Services (AHS) and external initiatives with significant ethical implications through participation in working groups and task force
  • The candidates should be able to contribute continually to the promotion, awareness, and ongoing development of a quality, high-performing, and responsive Clinical Ethics Service
  • The candidates should be able to support the development of and work collaboratively with ethics communities of practice and other resources within AHS to build organizational ethics capacity
