Requirements:

Experience: Candidates don’t need experience although having experience is an asset
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to work in remote camp settings for extended periods of time and understand methods for data management and security
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license, First Aid Certification and 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
- The candidates should have inland fisheries-related work experience and a working knowledge of various fish species common to Alberta, including various fish aging techniques
- The candidates should have a working knowledge of how to collect fisheries data, including sampling techniques such as electrofishing (backpack, boat, and float), gill netting, and angler interviews
- The candidates should have Pleasure Craft Operator’s certification and operational boating experience
- The candidates should be proficient in the use of computers, including MS Office (Word, Excel, stats, and presentation software programs)
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to participate in the provincial walleye gamete collection program, including walleye trapping, gamete collection, egg fertilization, and transportation to fish hatcheries
- The candidates should be able to plan daily field data collection activities under supervision, following provided guidelines and standards
- The candidates should be able to review and understand data collection and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements before fieldwork
- The candidates should be able to conduct field surveys, including electrofishing, index netting, creel surveys, angler effort surveys, fish sampling, and human dimensions studies
- The candidates should be able to collect field data safely in accordance with provincial standards and under supervision
- The candidates should be able to safely operate equipment such as trucks, off-highway vehicles (OHVs), and boats and prepare samples and conduct lab analyses, such as fish aging and stomach content analysis
- The candidates should be able to record field data accurately in notebooks, on paper, or digitally, and transcribe data into the provincial FWMIS database
- The candidates should be able to keep detailed field notes, data entry sheets, and photos, with regular reviews from supervisors and review hazards and controls, contribute to safety plans, and ensure compliance with safety protocols
- The candidates should be able to clean, organize, and maintain field equipment to meet program needs and OH&S requirements and perform regular maintenance checks, arrange equipment repairs, and ensure Personal Protective Equipment
