Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a minimum of Grade 12 education
Experience: Candidates should have at least three years of experience in arboriculture, tree maintenance

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in inclement weather
  • The candidates should be able to work efficiently in a team environment, be motivated, hard-working, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should be capable of performing the physical demands of the position, including lifting, climbing, and kneeling on a regular basis

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have or equivalent post-secondary education in a related field and a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) credential (or equivalent) and experience in climbing techniques and necessary apparatus, subject to infield testing
  • The candidates should hold current International Society of Arborists (ISA) Certified Arborist accreditation (or equivalent program accreditation) in good standing and Certification in Aerial Lifts, Aerial Work Platforms, Chainsaw operation, and Working from Heights is preferred
  • The candidates should possess a valid MTO ‘DZ’ class driver’s licence in good standing with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (maximum of 3 demerit points; maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving-related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions)
  • The candidates should have experience operating equipment such as aerial lifts, chipper, chainsaw, and front-end loader and First Aid and AED certification or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire
  • The candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, actual and potential hazards associated with forestry services, and knowledge of Book 7
  • The candidates should be able to work with computer programs such as GIS software, Maximo, and Microsoft software
  • The candidates should have experience with winter control operations, including plowing, salting, and trackless operation

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a wide range of maintenance and operational activities related to forestry tasks, including pruning, planting, and tree removal using various equipment and climbing techniques
  • The candidates should be able to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and coordinate and maintain required documentation and record-keeping
  • The candidates should be able to provide guidance to staff on operational activities, equipment, and health and safety-related procedures where qualified
  • The candidates should be able to provide exceptional customer service by responding to customer inquiries, addressing customer needs, and maintaining communication with user groups on an ongoing basis
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to perform daily checks on vehicles and equipment, including documenting any issues
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies
  • The candidates should be able to perform winter operations activities and may participate in winter control shifts and participate on various teams and initiatives
  • The candidates should be able to participate in team development and the implementation of operational or maintenance programs to meet Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Services Division objectives and customer
