Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Canadian Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse certification CPMHN(C)
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years experience working with individuals with mental health and substance use issues

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate considerable flexibility in duties performed, the ability to work under pressure, and make timely, accurate medical decisions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have special knowledge and skills including crisis intervention and risk assessment, psychiatric diagnosis symptomology, crisis and behavior management, pharmacology, suicidal intervention models, basic chemical dependency, stages of change models, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy
  • The candidates should possess excellent verbal communication skills to promote patient confidence and obtain patient compliance and experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning in a mental health setting
  • The candidates should have excellent written communication skills to provide accurate medical assessments to physicians, counseling staff, and other health care professionals
  • The candidates should maintain discretion with respect to the confidentiality of patient information and possess resourcefulness and initiative
  • The candidates should have experience responding to clients in emotional crisis or urgent need in an unscheduled or drop-in format
  • The candidates should have excellent communication skills and the ability to develop therapeutic rapport in a non-judgmental manner with students from diverse backgrounds
  • The candidates should have experience working in a shared care model with an interdisciplinary team and understand the developmental stage of this age group, key mental health issues, and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary education
  • The candidates should be a registered nurse (BScN) with current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses and excellent time management skills
  • The candidates should have preferably including 2 years with emerging adults and experience with case management, crisis or trauma counselling, ASIST intervention, and working independently
  • The candidates should have experience working with community agencies and resources for mental health and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Substitute Decision Act, and the Health Care Consent Act

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment and report to the Director of Health Services, providing case management for students with complex mental health challenges and disorders
  • The candidates should be able to utilize the nursing process to offer mental health support, crisis intervention, and care to students experiencing mental health problems and disorders
  • The candidates should be able to liaise with relevant Health and Counselling staff and external community agencies to support case management for students with complex mental health disorders or challenges, including monitoring client response to treatment and determining risk of harm to self and others
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the provision of campus mental health and addictions education, as well as contribute to policy development
