City of Vancouver’s Department of Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability is responsible for guiding the city’s growth and development while promoting sustainability and livability. It oversees urban planning initiatives, zoning regulations, and design guidelines to ensure responsible development and vibrant neighborhoods. By fostering sustainable practices and community engagement, it seeks to create resilient and equitable urban environments. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a university graduate degree in planning or a related discipline, recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners
Experience: Candidates should have professional planning experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and should possess strong organizational and project management skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate sound research and analytical abilities and have demonstrated experience in planning-related research, data, monitoring, policy analysis, and communicating findings
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of zoning and land use regulations and should demonstrate a working knowledge of, and experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS), as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • The candidates should have graphic skills and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite and other similar design-related software
  • The candidates should have a general knowledge of City by-laws, processes, and policies, which would be an asset
  • The candidates should possess strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to communicate with the public in person and over the phone
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the City’s community and area plans, and related policies
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in managing workload while delivering projects on time
  • The candidates must be able to work independently and participate successfully on work teams

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to develop and conduct research on a range of planning and policy issues
  • The candidates should be able to source and develop property, demographic, and other statistical information to support planning initiatives
  • The candidates should be able to support qualitative and quantitative analysis of economic and demographic data for use in projects and support the evaluation and monitoring of city community plans
  • The candidates should be able to collect, manage, and interpret various sources of data, including the regular use of GIS and ArcGIS software
  • The candidates should be able to develop and conduct in-depth research and analyses on topics related to land use and policy
  • The candidates should be able to write reports and technical papers for senior staff in PDS and other departments
  • The candidates should be able to organize and facilitate public consultation processes
  • The candidates should be able to develop informational and graphic materials for public open houses, workshops, and for inclusion in Council reports
  • The candidates should be able to summarize public consultation processes and survey results for senior staff and the public to inform next steps in the planning program
  • The candidates should be able to maintain and update websites and help coordinate social media outreach
