Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field
Experience: Candidates should have two (2) years of professional planning experience, with a focus on developing municipal planning policy in an urban municipality; additional development planning experience would be an asset

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, which is preferred
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of planning theory, provincial and regional planning policy, and planning-related legislation
  • The candidates should have highly developed research and analytical skills, as well as report writing capability
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills
  • The candidates should have a demonstrated ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize assignments
  • The candidates should have strong report writing and presentation skills, enabling them to communicate to a variety of audiences
  • The candidates should have the ability to work effectively within a team environment as well as independently
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal harmoniously and diplomatically with the general public and elected officials
  • The candidates should possess computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Local municipal planning experience and knowledge of the City of Waterloo are assets
  • The candidates must have a valid MTO “G” class driver’s license and personal vehicle, or self-funded alternative means of demonstrated efficient and reliable transportation between required work sites/locations
  • A Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the city is required as a condition of hire
  • Applicants may be required to undergo testing as part of the recruitment process
  • The candidates should have a passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment
  • The candidates should have a strong commitment to delivering quality customer service
  • The candidates should demonstrate a commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to undertake land use, policy, and planning studies and initiatives to support municipal development objectives
  • The candidates should be able to evaluate and respond to both internal and external policy initiatives and trends relevant to urban planning
  • The candidates should be able to conduct research, analyze information, formulate policies, and write reports to support planning decision-making processes
  • The candidates should be able to engage with the public and stakeholders, providing education and advice on planning policies and processes
  • The candidates should be able to assist in the creation and implementation of long-range planning and development policies
  • The candidates should be able to provide advice to Council and senior staff on appropriate strategies and planning for sustainable growth
  • The candidates should be able to process, review, and provide comments on development applications in accordance with established procedures
  • The candidates should be able to offer assistance, support, and services to various municipal Committees and working groups related to planning matters
  • The candidates should be able to conduct background research and manage data for the Planning Division to inform decision-making processes
  • The candidates should be able to support team members with research tasks and administrative duties as required
  • The candidates should be able to offer professional planning advice and information to Council and Committees of Council as needed
  • The candidates should be able to represent the City of Waterloo at the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal when required
  • The candidates should be able to support City and corporate initiatives related to planning and development
  • The candidates should be able to support the objectives of the Planning Division and the City of Waterloo
