Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Grade 8 or equivalent combination of training and experience
Experience: Candidates should have minimum 2 years of experience working in construction or railway maintenance including operation of power and hand tools and heavy equipment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to operate a variety of power and hand tools and/or machinery to perform general maintenance/repair work
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to operate a two-way radio and other communication devices
  • The candidates should be able to operate track and heavy equipment
  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing all of the duties and responsibilities of the position, including but not limited to, lifting up to 50 pounds, repetitive movement, crouching, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs, working at heights or in confined spaces, both indoors and outside in varying weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience using personal computers, computerized work management systems, and Microsoft applications (Outlook and Word) and should possess knowledge of railway operating and maintenance rules
  • The candidates should have knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations, and procedures applicable to the area of work (such as confined entry, hazardous conditions, and working from heights)
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work alone under minimal supervision and have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • The candidates should possess the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and have the ability to maintain equipment and material records
  • The candidates should possess the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard. A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform inspections and maintenance of railway and aqueduct infrastructure
  • The candidates should be able to report to one of two shops located in either Ross, Manitoba (approximately 58 km, East of Winnipeg) or Hadashville, Manitoba (approximately 100 km, East of Winnipeg)
  • The candidates should be able to be dispatched from the shop to a work location, typically along the SLA (Shoal Lake Aqueduct)
  • The candidates should be able to perform railway-related construction, repairs, and maintenance under the direct supervision of the Foreman or Section Worker 2
  • The candidates should be able to perform SLA-related maintenance under the direct supervision of the Foreman or Section Worker 2
  • The candidates should be able to conduct railway inspections to ensure continued and safe operation and able to conduct SLA inspections to ensure continued and safe operation
  • The candidates should be able to attend Shoal Lake Intake when operationally required
