Alberta Health Services’ Adult Inpatient Program offers specialized care for adults with acute mental health challenges. It provides psychiatric assessments, treatment, and support services within hospital settings. It ensures timely and comprehensive care for patients, promoting recovery and well-being while addressing the complex needs of individuals experiencing acute mental health issues. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program
Experience: Candidates should have previous experience in acute mental health

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA)
  • The candidates should possess a current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification
  • The candidates should be with RN or RPN qualifications who are active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA), or active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • The candidates should demonstrate a proven ability to work positively, effectively, and cooperatively within an interdisciplinary team
  • The candidates should exhibit strong initiative and the ability to work independently with limited supervision and demonstrate leadership, team-building, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with an outstanding customer-focused attitude
  • The candidates should have knowledge of mental health assessments, treatment methodologies, and intervention strategies and competent in assessing behavioral risks and interventions to ensure the safety of patients, themselves, and others
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to manage a wide variety of clinical situations within a fast-paced environment with varying levels of acuity
  • The candidates should have knowledge of and competent de-escalation skills and should maintain a commitment to continued professional development
  • The candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively carry out the duties of the position, both physically and emotionally

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Unit Manager or designated Manager
  • The candidates should be able to provide direct nursing care following the full scope of practice as set out by the College of Alberta Registered Nurses and/or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses Alberta and the Health Professions Act
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong foundation in mental health and addictions and able to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, considering the involvement of family and appropriate others
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the effective operation of the unit when assuming designated responsibilities and contribute to the learning experience of students, staff, and patients
  • The candidates should be able to provide leadership through a wide variety of nursing services to patients (clients, residents) aimed at promoting, maintaining, or restoring health, mental health, and preventing mental illness, injury, and disability
  • The candidates should be able to teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being
  • The candidates should be able to provide safe, quality patient and family-centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Alberta Health Services
