Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology
Experience: Candidates should have a 6 years related experience in road repair, construction and maintenance

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have familiarity with Snow and Ice removal operations, as well as the operations and maintenance of heavy equipment
  • The candidates should adhere to and promote a safe, healthy, and engaged work culture where innovation is encouraged

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a High School diploma (or other related diploma) and two (2) years of related experience. Alternatively, a High School diploma or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • The candidates should have strong supervisory skills and previous experience leading a crew and possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record, as frequent travel is essential to this position
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, highway maintenance practices, construction methods, and department specifications
  • The candidates should be familiar with working in a computerized environment, including spreadsheet, word processing, and email applications
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Department’s maintenance policies and procedures, as well as familiarity with the CUPE collective agreement and knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act and Public Highways
  • The candidates should be problem solvers and innovators who generate, promote, and implement new ideas and resolve concerns
  • The candidates should possess proven and professional communication skills, both oral and written, for collaborating with Department personnel and members of the public
  • The candidates should have well-developed planning and organizational skills, coupled with the ability to multi-task and adapt in this fast-paced environment with competing priorities and strict deadlines
  • The candidates should maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the effective and efficient utilization of equipment and material resources used in road repair, maintenance, and snow and ice control operations
  • The candidates should be able to ensure preventive maintenance is completed on a daily basis to uphold the functionality of equipment and material resources
  • The candidates should be able to conduct preliminary site investigations to identify safety hazards and potential problems to infrastructure, and recommend or resolve a course of action to remedy the situation
  • The candidates should be able to interact with both the public and private sectors to address enquiries, complaints, and requests related to road repair, maintenance, and snow and ice control operations
  • The candidates should be able to supervise the Winter Snow and Ice Control Program during the winter season, ensuring that levels of service are maintained and the safety of the motoring public and Department staff is prioritized
  • The candidates should be able to assist in developing a plan of action for the Winter Works Program, including planning routes, staffing, and equipment assignments
  • The candidates should be able to ensure stocks of road salt and traction sand are replenished to maintain adequate supplies for winter road maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to assist in coordinating the repair and maintenance of fleet equipment used in road repair, maintenance, and snow and ice control operations
