Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
Experience: Candidates don’t need experience although having experience is an asset

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be at least 18 years old

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid driver’s license
  • The candidates should be available for calls 24 hours per day and should be able to respond to the designated work site within two hours of receiving the call
  • Work schedules are irregular and are determined by the rotation of the extra board, including weekends and holidays
  • The candidates should be capable of performing work for up to 12 hours per shift, which may involve traveling away from home and being away for 24-48 hours at a time
  • The candidates should be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • The candidates should be able to walk long distances on railroad roadbeds
  • The candidates should have the ability to lift up to 100 lbs on occasion
  • The candidates should be able to recognize and distinguish between the colors of signals, signs, and other visual displays
  • The candidates should possess good communication skills and be able to work efficiently with minimum supervision
  • The candidates should be at ease working with, on, and around heavy equipment that is in motion

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in train or yard service depending on seniority
  • The candidates should be able to strictly follow and execute work according to operating rules and safety procedures
  • The candidates should be able to carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
  • The candidates should be able to observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting the movement of the train
  • The candidates should be able to signal crew members for the movement of the engine or train using specific signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, set, or release air brakes
  • The candidates should be able to have a thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Orders, and Bulletins as they pertain to the safe movement of trains, goods, and hazardous materials, ensuring the safety of CPKC employees and the general public
  • The candidates should be able to provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in an emergency situation as stipulated in the operating rules
  • The candidates should be able to move on and off moving or stationary equipment while the train is performing industrial, station, or yard switching
  • The candidates should be able to ride a moving car by hanging onto grab irons or a ladder, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • The candidates should be able to fill out required forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare required clear and legible reports
  • The candidates should be able to maintain first aid qualifications and apply first aid in emergency situations
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the yard operations area and be alert to changing conditions, taking safe and responsible action to prevent personal injury and equipment damage
