Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a high school diploma
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to perform physically demanding work, including walking up to 10 kilometers a day on uneven ground, climbing, and lifting or pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion)
  • The candidates should be able to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment
  • The candidates should be able to work up to 12-hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays
  • The candidates should be able to report to work within a two-hour call window after scheduled rest and excellent focus, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask
  • The candidates should be at least 18 years old and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have strong communication skills to provide clear and concise instructions/directions, including over the radio
  • The candidates should be able to pass the required physical job tasks, written examinations, and read and understand safety instructions, operating rules, and other printed materials in English
  • The candidates should have general equivalency diploma (GED) and possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in either train or yard service depending on seniority, carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out the coupling device and observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting the movement of the train
  • The candidates should be able to signal crew members for the movement of the engine or train using specific signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, or set and release air brakes
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a thorough understanding of and follow the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders, and bulletins
  • The candidates should be able to provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in an emergency situation and move on and off moving or stationary equipment and fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports
  • The candidates should be able to handle emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and apply first aid techniques
